They have a vague plan that the buildings by the river will be lower and evrything will ramp up to the three supertalls in the middle. You can see it in action with the line of buildings of very similar height from the new IFC twin(s) past the bank buildings down to the Jasper tower. The buildings on the river side are shorter and the ones right by it are around 100m. Better to just have a free-for-all if you ask me. Pushi's skyline is delightfully chaotic.

why would you spend all that money to construct a tower that needs to be appreciated from a distance, right behind another tower almost as tall?

this building was supposed to have been built a decade ago (around the same time jin mao was u/c) as well as several other supertalls in the vicinity. shanghai should be lucky that it even got built.

Although it is frustrating having to post photos you've taken with a point-n-shoot camera when you have your SLR back in your apartment...

The neo-gothic crowned twins are pretty nice. They are located just some blocks south of the Bund. The surrounding blocks consist almost exclusively of shikumens, still.

HK's tall ones are definitely more concentrated than Shanghai's which are spread over a huge area, unlike any other cities in the world (bar Tokyo, but it's skyscrapers are much lower than Shanghai's).
The premier skyscraper city though? Not today. In ten years it will be very hard to beat...

:previous: I'm sorry to disagree... but from what I've observered from pix(never having been there myself) Hong Kongs supertalls (6) (officially, since a building needs to be completed to count) are scattered over a very large area, while Shanghais supertalls (3) are concentrated in a very small area, and if you're referring simply to tall buildings (not supertalls), both cities have lots of them all over the place... in fact, most people on this website will agree that a SKYSCRAPER is 500 feet tall (or more), and a SUPERTALL is 1000 feet (or more) (personally I don't agree with these numbers, but I'm in the minority, so I'll shut up about it now) and it's a simple fact that Hong Kong has more 500 foot (and 1000 foot) buildings than Shanghai does. All that being said, I have nothing against Shanghai. I love Shanghais skyline and look forward to it becomming even more awesome! SWFC kicks butt!

And Shanghai's not standing still, either. The SWFC is amazing, no doubt about it - but the upcoming Shanghai Centre will blow it and pretty much every other supertall in the world out of the water in terms of design. Once it's built, Shanghai will have the best supertall cluster in the world - Jin Mao, SWFC, and Shanghai Centre, all within a 2 block radius of each other.

Can you direct me to a thread for this Shanghai Centre

This building is my favorite building in the world. I'm usually jealous of other county's taller buildings, but this is not one of them. This building is so sleek, elegant, modern. I like skyscrapers that are simplistic but remain stylish. Also, Shanghai is one of my favorite cities. Love all the interesting styles of buildings. Between Dubai and Shanghai, I'd would prefer to visit this city. Still would love the view from the top of the Burj Dubai though.

I agree, The SWFC is not like any tower being built right now. It puts most of them to shame. The tower is modern, yet not overdone and is a standout in the Shanghai skyline, which itself is quite impressive.

Can we soon call the Shanghai World Financial Center the tallest (completed) skyscraper in the world at this point? If not, what key characteristics are we waiting to see before it can be granted that title?
Is this considered "topped out"? I understand the interiors are not yet complete, but the exterior appearance is quickly nearing what will be permanant.
I would like to see this magnificent structure get its fifteen minutes of fame before the Burj Dubai takes the #1 spot! :)

^^ If you wanted to, it would only be so under one, perhaps two of the four criteria; for tallest building (to roof), and possibly highest occupied floor (this is actually pretty probable). Still, neither of these is the "official" record (which is really just a traditional method), Tapei 101 is going to hold that record for maybe another year or so.

That's exactly the feeling I get when I stand below this tower looking up on it, Aleks0o01. The stone base represents the massive constructions of ancient China (Great Wall, the city walls of Xi'an, Nanjing etc.), fact is the base almost gives an impression of having stood there for thousands of years.

You have to see it for yourself. It is skyscraper history being written.

I'm going to do a more thorough tour of the tower's details in a while. I just have to wait until my wide-angle lens gets back from the Maldives...

This (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3141/2713587333_72f18b51f4_o.jpg) is a wonderful picture Staff, one of the best, if not the best I have
seen of it ever! This building will be a remembered as a great example of the supertalls build in the 2000's.

Actually it is not completed just yet. Still work to do around the base, as well as removing all the protective film from the cladding. I imagine there's quite a bit of interior work to be done as well before it opens in late August.

A snapshot showing the whole building, also from today;

Definitely steals the show from poor old Jin Mao.

Then what's going to happen once Shanghai Center is built?

The cladding up top is still driving me crazy :/.

When you getting back staff? 789 bar should be an outstanding view, esp with the IFC rising.

Staff's snapshots make my photos look like a black velvet painting in a trailer park.

I don't think SWFC is stealing Jin Mao's show. My appreciation for Jin Mao has risen a lot because of the style contrast and the contrast really brings out what is so cool about Jin Mao. Two very cool structures.

Thanks guys.

Rise To The Top,
I think I'll go to 789 at least once more before I leave in mid-August.

SWFC will open on September 1st according to some guys I spoke to on the site today.

Some snaps from today, July 31st;

The building that works as the entrance to the observation decks at street level.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3257/2719379973_b06d71e921_o.jpg

You enter this building and take an escalator down underground into a tunnel which leads straight to the dedicated observation decks elevators inside the SWFC - this way the observation deck/tourist part of the building are completely separated from the hotel and office parts.

Bamboo has been planted in different areas around the tower. Looks great together with the stone clad base.

Total drool....so massive, so bulky with the stone into the gigantic monolith it is from some angles. Building of the year for 2008 and maybe the 2000-2009
decade.

I love that Forum Entrance! It's like a modern, secret laboratory hidden in an ancient building. That bamboo looks great too. Man, I will kill my self if I don't visit China for at least half a year.

The base is very cool, it’s very Mori. If you look at Roppongi Hills it has a similar design theme.

I was never crazy about this building. I always felt like Jin Mao left it with some pretty big shoes to fill, design-wise... but the base is stunning and definitely wins me over. The stone and bamboo has a very traditional Asian look to it, and it makes this building only suitable for the city Shanghai.

Well done.

May I ask what is up with the Aurora building in the night skyline? Is that really a 15+ story tall video display the width of the entire building? :stunned: The reflection in the river shows just how incredibly bright that thing is!

Northwest,

Yes, that is a gigantic video display. However, if you look closer you'll notice that the Citigroup Building just to the right of Aurora has an even larger display on its facade - the world's largest of its kind I heard.
