oh, i just watched a documentation program made by Geographic Channel for the supertall, which seems it is not only a high building and also it is very safety, the designer consider the natural risk and the terrorist attacking, which contains the survival flool, and the sightseeing lifts in the four corners are also the support of it.
It is really amazing job!!

Construction started in 1997, but was halted later, then, it had a lower height, and a circular hole. Construction would not start again until 2003, the height was increased, new square hole, and the building was redesigned to withstand a 9/11 styled attack.

But I'm confused by your comment, if you mean you already know about this, then nevermind! :haha:

Chicago Spire rendering looks ugly and out of place with the rest of the Chicago skyline compare to SWFC. It's a beautiful tower that fits well for its city and a nice compliment to Jin Mao and the Shanghai skyline. Best new tower in the world hands down.

This thread is about the SWFC not which city has better architecture or skylines. Stick to the topic.

Best building in the world at the moment! Spire has a lot to live up to if they want to beat this. Everything in Dubai looks like a trailer park garage sale compared to this stuff.

And Shanghai's not standing still, either. The SWFC is amazing, no doubt about it - but the upcoming Shanghai Centre will blow it and pretty much every other supertall in the world out of the water in terms of design. Once it's built, Shanghai will have the best supertall cluster in the world - Jin Mao, SWFC, and Shanghai Centre, all within a 2 block radius of each other.

A skyscrapers.com news that corroborates pictures :

2003-02-13 Reported by Thomas Jaehndel

News: Shanghai World Financial Center resumes construction

Shanghai: A grand ceremony earlier today marked the resumption of construction of what will be one of the tallest buildings in the world. The Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC) will be 492 meters tall and contain 97 floors of office space, hotel rooms and sightseeing areas as was stated in an official press conference today by the building's developer, Japan's Mori Building Corporation.

Construction of the SWFC started in August 1997 but was put on hold one year later when an enormous glut of office space hit the city's property market. Since most of this space is now being absorbed the developer is confident that the building will be a commercial success when opened on October 1st, 2007.

Industry insiders in Shanghai believe that SWFC's final height might even exceed 500 meters, a rumour Mori declined to comment on. Another contender for the title of the tallest building in the world, Taipei 101 in Taiwan's capital will be 508 meters tall.
I thought I'd quote this from the first page of this thread. Amazing this thing has been more than 10 years in the making! And finally it's just about done.

I find it odd that this was once a contender for WTB, kinda sad that it never made it. Such a beautiful structure.

Well, the only building taller than the SWFC right now by roof height is a half-clad skeleton in the middle of the desert in Dubai, so I guess it isn't that far off. ;)

Wait, the SWFC is taller than Taipei? Wouldn't that make it the new WTB? Unless Taipei's spire is counted as part of the structure. Which it may be, I'm not entirely sure. Taipei 101 is around 60 feet taller than SWFC with the spire.

exactly taipeo'S sprie is counted as part of the structure. that's the only reason why it is the current WTB.

When you look at the building from the front or the back, the design is beautiful. But once you see it from the side, like the picture above, it just looks ugly to me. It's like a fat building...

i was in shangahi a few weeks ago and was really disappointed by the location of this tower...its a stunning design, but can not be appreciated from 90% of the vantage points that you have of it in the city...when seen from pretty much anywhere in shangahi itself, it is behind the jin mao building.

that design would have been amazing if it was seen in silhouette in the skyline, but you almost never get to see it....even from one of the most famous vantage points of any skyline in the world (the bund), you can barely read the shape of the building.

why would you spend all that money to construct a tower that needs to be appreciated from a distance, right behind another tower almost as tall?....i cant believe they didnt consider that....especially in a skyline that isnt really part of the city and the buildings are generally only viewed from across the river, not from the streets around it.

trueviking,

One of the 'problems' in Shanghai is that no matter how tall a building is, or where it is located, it is going to be blocked by thousands upon thousands of other skyscrapers anyway.
The only way to get a decent view of most of the towers is to be up in another tall tower.

Placing three of the world's five tallest buildings (by today's standards) in virtually the same block will have its drawbacks in terms of them blocking each other, but it will be a damn impressive sight nonetheless. ;)

It works fine as a pair with Jin Mao. The idea of "three brothers" is also a good one. The isolated tall skyscraper à la Taipei 101 is less appealing.

Trueviking,

I was in Shanghai in March and April and I was impressed about the dominant appearance of the SWFC in the city. Whether you look towards Pudong from Jiabeiqu, Huangpuqu, Xujiahui, pudong north of Lujiazui, or from a taxi on any elevated highway in the citycenter, SWFC is clearly visible. Only from a certain location on the Bund it is rather hidden from view by Jin Mao and the other scrapers on the other side of the Huangpu. But the Bund is long, and if you walk a bit Southward, you can catch it in plain view again. I think the closeness to Jin Mao moreover emphasizes SWFC's size, and this makes it even more beautiful.

By the way, I like the Three brothers concept. Do you guys also think it could relate to the Romance of the Three Kingsdoms (Liu Xuande, Guanyu, Zhang Fei)? Just a thought.

It may have a bad location, but I do think that there are a few regulations on height in Pudong. Certain blocks are zoned differently, which is why the IFC was scaled down, or something of the like. Correct me if I am wrong staff and giallo.
