Most of the pictures of SWFC that are placed on this forum are from a view with the hole-sides. Three days ago I went to take pics of the ' slender' side of the building, so you will get an impression of that too.

The first 3 pics are taken from Lujiazui, Pudong, and the fourth pic is taken from Yuyuan garden, Puxi. This should give us a complete image of what the building looks like.

Some people say the facade looks too plain next the Jin Mao, but I think it's makes a nice counterpoint. Very impressive tower, still one of my favourites- got a good sculptural quality.

For some reason I can envision some jackass try to fly their airplane through the hole. Hope it never happens.

I think the side-angle perspective makes the building look even more impressive. The gradual sloped facade ending in a very thin point at the top is just something you don't see everyday, especially on this scale.

We had some bad weather in Shanghai the past weekend. Rain, smog, thunderstorm, but yesterday was a nice day to go out to Pudong and up the Oriental Pearl. The pics were taken 09-04-08. On the close-up you can see the progress of the past fe weeks. They completed the exterior of the upper skydeck. The remains of the former left crane are gone. The right crane seems to have a subcrane attached, though.

The next two pics are of the construction site of the 3rd Supertall in Lujiazui, that will be build next to Jin Mao and SWFC.

The site seems to be empty and abandonned for the moment. A plastered wall is build around the entire site, and I had to raise my camera above the edge to take the pic.

Does anyone have any news on the start of contruction and the choice of the final design?

I actually find this building much less appealing now that it's nearing completion. How's that for irony? I've never liked it the same since they changed the opening from a circle to a trapezoid, I don't like when buildings are clad the way this one was, because it looks like it has twice as many floors, which massively dehumanizes it, and the facade in general is way too monotonous. Also, from the side (this has been mentioned), it looks downright stupid.

Those of you who like this building, don't take my criticisms to heart, but this is unfortunately how I feel now.

Yeah, you can't see the hole from the side, but I like how much the profile of the building changes from different angles. It is a whole different building, very dynamic.

The W=A supertall planned for Chicago will have a similar blade shape, so that the profile will change dramatically from different angles. From the pictures of SWFC, I think W=A is going to look good.

Naw, too much sterile space in Western Lujiazui. What would really top it off would be a nicely designed stadium between the Peal and the convention centre/mall.

Thanks for the updates :)

Giallo or other Shanghai residents, I have this question. During my stay in the city a month ago, I noticed that the elevated highway connection of Yanan dong lu (Yanan East Road), where it used to connect to Waitan (The Bund), had been broken down. Construction was in progress at that formerly heavely used highway connection. What are they changing/building there instead of the former connection to Waitan? The traffic seems to be a drama there, since the route was changed... Does anyone know?

Exactly :)

Of course, there are aicraft beacons installed on each side of the top, reaching ~490-491m.

The last cladding row is the finishing touch :D But I think this row is not topped out yet, just halfway.

The bigger terrace crane removed, just the smaller one left.

Cleaning of the whole building on progress :)

This is one of those buildings that will completely change in character once the last window has been installed.

In this photo, where it looks like it has been completed, it looks unbelievably awesome;

It's not flawless, but it's one of the few really great skyscrapers on the planet.

I've never seen a photo of Jin Mao from that angle. The facade looks really cool there.
