It's a basic glass slab (which I've seen basically every variation of already) right next to the most overarticulated facade in modern architecture. SWFC is all about massing, the details are (as they've always been) utterly lacking.

Just ask yourself, if the building topped out is it is, and the facade was finished up to the top. Would you really find this building interesting? I highly doubt it. Until it breaks 1,400 feet and has its hole, this building is blah.

staff
Oct 15, 2006, 5:24 AM
I agree about the facade of Jin Mao; you have to be close to it to appreciate the facade details - from a distance it looks a bit 'messed up'.

What about the tapering shape of SWFC? It's not just a tall building with a hole, in my opinion - even without the hole, it would still have it's unique shape.
My intentions are not to start a flame-war, or go off-topic, but you have the Sears Tower as avatar - would people, even in the US, have any idea what building it was if it weren't super tall?

Here is an article from the Shanghai Daily:

World tallest skyscraper ready in 2008

Winny Wang

2006-10-26

SHANGHAI World Financial Center will be completed on March 23, 2008 to become the world's tallest skyscraper in terms of its roof height and the floor that people can reach, local media reported today.

The 101-story 492-meter building, which can hold 40,000 people, is expected to stand at a height of 398.93 meters by the end of this year, with construction of 91 floors already complete, the reports said.

More than 120 elevators will be installed in the building, and the fastest one can reach 10 meters per second.

Tony Chi, the designer of a five-star hotel from the 79th floor to the 93rd floor in the building, said the 100-plus rooms all have different styles, which can fit the needs of customers' preferences.

The building's parking lot can hold about 1,100 vehicles. It will also have the world's highest sightseeing area between the 94th and 100th floors.

The center, which resumed construction last year after a seven-year delay because of a cash crunch and a sharp decline in the demand for office space amid the Asian financial crisis, will be built into into a mixed-use tower comprising office, hotel, business, conference and sightseeing facilities.

The developer, Mori Building Co, also changed its initial design – a void carved out of the top of the building – from a cylinder shape into a trapezoid.

Fine !
But it's hard to believe. About 30 floors in just over two months would mean a rate of more than three floors per week.

I'm skeptical.

Fine !
But it's hard to believe. About 30 floors in just over two months would mean a rate of more than three floors per week.

I'm skeptical.

Maybe it's possible considering how narrow the upper floors will be.

Great pictures!
Is that by any chance the habitation (protection) floor with all the workers and the rebars for the floor slab? The huge braces of steel at the edge is hinting at just that.
I heard that this tower will have a couple of safe floors in the event of a fire spread apart at intervals of 12 floors.

I been looking at this thing since it first started to rise and I am truly impressed with the pace of construction. Shanghai is truly a cosmopolitan city driving towards the future! Despite the 7 years delay or so, its looking very nice.

Really ?
It doesn't look that tall.
Probably because of super-tall Jin Mao next door.
And also the fact that the cladding gives no indication of the number of floors, which reduces the impression of height.

Excellent, although I would have preferred they kept the round hole at the top.

Plus it would be cool to have an office just above the hole .

Ever thought that it would be better for the skyline if this were built further away, unless more supertalls go up.

staff
Nov 1, 2006, 9:11 PM
gixer,
There are more core configurations to be made, so expect more (month-long?) halts to the construction phase. The tower has risen very fast the past weeks, and actually caugh up and passed the Burj Dubai in height, since the last core configuration though. The ICC in Hong Kong is rising in an even more exceptional speed though - maybe it will pass the SWFC next year.
SWFC is now officially a supertall...

MARK,
The Shanghai Center (the tower designated for the Z3-2 plot), 600m+, is going to rise pretty much in the same block as Jin Mao and SWFC.

which skyline will look best in the future, I thought it definetly would be Dubai, but now I am not that shure: The Shanghai Center (the tower designated for the Z3-2 plot), 600m+, is going to rise pretty much in the same block as Jin Mao and SWFC.

this building and Shanghai center wil BOOST the skyline very much, maybe even more than Dubai.

I LOVE THESE PHOTOS, IT SHOWS PUDONGS SKYLINE (CAPITALIST SKYSCRAPERS) CONTRASTED WITH THE OLDER COLONIAL SHANGHAI (EUROPEAN ARCHITECTURE). IF I SHOWED MY FRIENDS THESE PICTURES, THEY WOULD NOT KNOW THIS WAS CHINA (IN TERMS OF ARCHITECTURE....THERE'S NO WAY OF TELLING... THATS HOW RAPID CHINA IS CHANGING.

Bergenser I am beginning to think a bit...

I DONT THINK SHANGHAI WILL COMPETE WITH DUBAI, LET ALONE HONG KONG OR NYC IN TERMS OF SKYSCRAPERS. THIS PHOTO IS BASICALLY ALL SHANGHAI HAS AS FOR A SKYLINE. NYC AND HONG KONG GO FOR MILES, I'LL TAKE DOWNTOWN MANHATTAN WHEN THE NWTC IS BUILT OVER THIS SORT OF TACKY MIAMISH LOOKING FINANCIAL CENTER OF SHANGHAI. IF YOUR JUST A HEIGHT FAN, FOSTERS TOWER WILL BE AS TALL AS THE JMT, AND THE FT WITH THE SPIRE WILL BE TALLER THAN WFC (I AGREE WFC IS BETTER THOUGH) AND THE NEW KING OF NYC-ROGER'S IS THE CROWNING OF NYC'S FINANCIAL DISTRICT.

Dude, do you have any idea of what you're talking about?
Shanghai is arguably the city with most skyscrapers in the world, and there are of course much more skyscrapers in Puxi than in Pudong.

Have you ever been to Shanghai? I suggest you learn a thing or two before shouting shit all over the forums.
Try again, and do it right.

California? What the fuck are you talking about?

Do you actually think that Shanghai has 299 skyscrapers? It wouldn't surprise me if Shanghai has more skyscrapers than New York and Chicago combined.

By the way - we built 150 meters tall towers in Europe before we founded your country.

So I suggest you get your facts straight, or get the fuck out of here.

You have obviously never been to Shanghai. I can assure you, there are FAR more than 299 skyscrapers in Shanghai - probably 10 times that number, at least. Certainly far more than Toronto. Stop arguing when it's pretty damn clear you have no idea what you're talking about.

Also, learn how to turn off your caps lock key.

Having been to Shanghai several times, I can attest that it has many more than 299 skyscrapers. They are also spread out from city edge to city edge, not only clustered in the center.

Dont yell at me for the data, thats skyscraperpage.com's data. Anyway stop bickering, every site has various ways of evaluating skylines and buildings. Emporis.com ranks Shanghai at 834 buildings completed and HK at 7549...so I quess people trust them over your speculation...lol. Anyway get back on topic about this great building which in my opinion is better than the FT...as a New Yorker I can killed for saying that. I found this rendering online and don't believe WFC is at 300 meters yet..:<?
