Its starting to look like a picture of a real city, like an animation effect in a movie. I still think that you should make that bridge of yours brick to get that real NY/NJ felling you desirer for your city. It would look nice. Almost a Brooklyn Bridge feeling.

I'll try the brick soon, sounds like a good idea.

I redid the Galviston Enterprises Complex, from two towers, (with different designs) and two separate plazas, to two simular towers and one main plaza. If you already havent noticed The Jenna J. Galviston Plaza is modeled off of the World Trade Center Plaza.

HISTORY OF THE GALVISTON ENTERPRISES COMPLEX
eeh, I was bored, :)

BIRTH
In 1975, plans were forming for a new tallest in Staunton. Plans called for two twin 83 Story Towers, called the Staunton International Business Center. The Towers, both 1,067 feet high where to surpass the Garden State Building as Staunton's tallest. Construction began late 1976, by 1979 the 1st tower was completed. Tower Two, however was only half the height at the time, due to low occupantcy, construction was halted. Plans were revised, the tower was now only 577 feet high. The buildings were not loved by Staunton, many thought they "ruined the skyline" or where too large.

But in a short time, the Staunton International Business Center Towers became a prominent Staunton Landmark, and loved by the city. The project provided a huge boost for Downtown.
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/4969/001hg5.jpg

FAME & SUCESS
The Staunton International Business Center (SIBC) sparked the huge 80's-90's boom, resulting in demolition of many older, sometimes historic, buildings. The skyline rapidly grew, Staunton Square transformed from the dangerous porn central of the east coast, to a promising buiness district.

In 1989, Galviston Enterprises moved its World Headquarters to the West Tower, today, now occupying most of the complex. The Staunton Interational Business Center was renamed "Galviston Enterprises World Headquarters"

Into the 90's, the towers became nearly 98% occupied, Alex Galviston II became chairman in 1993, taking the company to new heights. By the late 90's the wealthy Galviston Family became more popular than singers and movie stars. Mr. & Mrs. Galviston literally became the symbol to "sucess". By 2001, Mr. Galviston concentrated on Galprises, Mrs. Jenna Galviston was noted for her high-profile charity work. Their son, 8 years old became a child star.

TRAGETY
Unfortunantly, all good things must end, on August 30th, 2001, Jenna Galviston was killed in a car accident. Her, the driver, and her bodygard where killed, her friend, also in the car, survived. Apparantly, the driver was speeding in the Staunton Inner City Tunnel, trying to escape the paparazzi's. The driver was drunk, and collided with a pillar.

History seemed to have repeated, eriely, Jenna Galviston's death was remarkably almost identical to Princess Diana's death, almost exactly 4 years earlier. Her funeral drew nearly 1 million mourners, almost half the population of Staunton. The funeral was broadcasted on live TV and was watched by nearly 1.5 billion people worldwide.

She was buried at the private park at Galviston Estate. The park is open for vistors during the spring, March 20th - June 15th.

As then, it seemed the world fell apart. Stock Market Crashed a few days later, suicide rates rose, crime levels soared, many lost their jobs, and the world was plummeted to a ecenomic depression. Staunton became America's Worst City.

In late 2001, The Plaza was renamed to the Jenna J. Galviston Plaza.

TODAY
Her husband, son, and family devastated, but recovered. Alex Galviston III, now 14, took it hard, now goes to a normal Jr. High School (wants a "normal" life) Alex Galviston II now focuses mainly on Galprises. The family has been ripped apart, still famous, but not always in a good way.

But the world is recovering, things are getting better, sorta..

Thanks! I'm really working on Staunton's History.

Its finally back
Jefferson Heights

One of my favorite districts, but hasnt appeared since 1.5. Jefferson Heights is a district of mid-highrise residential buildings, that went up quickly in the 70's-80's.

HISTORY OF JEFFERSON HEIGHTS
The history of this district has varied over time, but heres the current story: At the beggining of the boom Staunton needed more residential buildings, thus Jefferson Heights was born. The neighborhood of abandoned factories and slums was cleared out for several residential buildings.

Into the 90's the project was greatly sucessful. Crime in Staunton was at an all time low. As mentioned before, Jefferson is the most crime-ridden part of the US. But in the late 90's it was more of a suburb than a ghetto. The towers were home to the middle-class, but the views were simply incredible.

Today, into the later years of the depression, Jefferson Heights is nearly 43% Vacant. Prices gone up, Jefferson's crime rate exploded, affecting Jefferson Heights. But as Staunton recovers, a few at a time move back into Jefferson Heights, as it recovers.

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5130/001xs5.jpg

I'm sure you'll notice something different.
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2908/001sg0.jpg

What Happened?
As you'll notice only the Twin Towered Jefferson Place survived. Others went through redesigns such as Jefferson Terrance (the tallest) while others simply were replaced.

Wheres Corporate Peninsula?
Gone. It will not be returning. Although a cool idea, Corporate peninsula was not in the right place. It really didnt belong. Plus, look at it! Its a real obstruction, too many buildings, croweded to one place. Although, techinicly, Jefferson Heights was moved, for Fort Staunton Memorial Park. Corporate Peninsula was originally built by landfill.

Whats up with the park?
Fort Staunton Memorial Park. I've mentioned it several times before, (even though it wasnt there) A large park is much more pleasing than a crowded office park. Fort Staunton Memorial Park, was once the site of historical Fort Staunton, built during the American Revolution, where the Battle of Staunton was fought. The battle was disastorious, but the Americans came out on top. The ruins of the fort have long dissappeared, today the park sits on the site. A huge museum also occupies the spot: The Staunton Historical Museum.

Downtown, late afternoon. Jefferson Heights in the distance.

Well theres not much I can really do about it. Bigger textures means more space, its suprising that Staunton is smaller than Palm Dunes and City City, but is techically bigger in size. So small textures means faster preformance :)

Well I am planning on a Galleria/Midtown area far into the suburbs, with some minor supertalls. You know, like Houston/Dallas. A Midtown to the east would be a good idea, but I think Staunton already has enough supertalls, especially for a city with 1.8 Million.

How Staunton would effect Americas Largest 10.

Some more previewish type shots for the New Upper Northeast Side, so far the area is about 50% finished, the Park, currently has no official name. If you will notice, you will see many of the buildings resemble actual ones around New York's Central Park.

For Example, the building in the middle has some simulaity to the Trump International Hotel & Tower.

The Skyline of the Upper Northeast Side, city council is planning on changing the districts name for a 3rd time, as Upper Northeast Side sounds to ugly, and Trenton (the original name) was confusing, due to the state's capital.

Unless that's a trick with the new Sketchup, I think that's a photoshop trick.

Great looking city you've got there, Patrick. Makes me want to continue Beveraux and Huntington. Here's a little tip when you do the reflection:

If you want, on photoshop, take the "reflected part" and add a slight Gaussian Blur, and experiment with distortions and perspective to make it look more realistic. For rainy and foggy times, another cool effect I found is if you merge all layers, then duplicate it once. Take the layer on top, put on a very big Gaussian Blur, and change the opacity of that layer to about 8%. If done correctly, gives the city a very wet, or even heavenly-like appearance.

Hope that helps! :)

Patrick,

You have an absolutely extraodinary talent in making these models. They are of higher quality than many professional architectural renderings in my opinion. My only wish is that Staunton were real so that our great state could finally have a sizeable metropolis to call its own.

Your sketchup models have inspired me to download sketchup 5 (free) and start modeling my own cities. My question is, where on earth do you get your unbelievable textures?

Thanks for creating such an enjoyable and detailed experience for all who experience it. I have been following the days from way back when Staunton was loosely based on the urban environment of Grand Theft Auto III. I must say, Rocktart could've learned a thing or two about realistic city environments from you. Yours far exceeded the simplistic and unrealistic Staunton of that game.

As I am starting up my own cities, do you have any suggestions as to how best to realistically model them? I want to eventually post some of them on this forum.

Thanks,

Patrick

Long Live Staunton!

Dear Leader VI
Feb 13, 2007, 12:26 AM
I am the third, correct? Perhaps people whose name is Patrick have an uncommonly-astute interest in architectural engineering, city planning, and skyscrapers. :haha:

EDIT: Patrick, as I am from the Philadelphia region, I have often heard how Philadelphia is under-appreciated because it is "sandwiched" in between D.C., Baltimore, and New York. I'm wondering if Staunton perhaps has the same geographic situation, being between Philadelphia and New York. Any thoughts?

Yikes! More Patricks! Crazy.

Thanks Dear Leader VI, I love comments like that :)

I get my textures from Windows Live Local, but to make them work with a model, you will need Photoshop to straighten them out.

As for suggestions, I'll just have too see, post your models and I'll give you some tips :)

Also Staunton is sandwiched between New York City and Philadelphia. Usually New York dominates Staunton, as it is only 40 or so miles away. So I guess you can consider NYC and Staunton "Twin Cities" like Minnianapolis and St. Paul. Staunton is usually ignored since NYC is basicly better than Staunton in many ways. "Why go to Staunton when New York is an hour away?" Staunton is only better in things such as slums and crime.

The problem is, what do you guys think, Staunton is probably too close to New York? Wouldnt New York steal all the Tourism and Business? At first Staunton was way more South, near Atlantic City, but I later decided to move it north.

What do you guys think?

It would probably be more realistic to have it further south, but it's all up to you.

I agree with foxmtbr in the idea, it'd probably be more realistic if Staunton was further south, but in all honesty, having them twin cities doesn't see all that out there. I wanted to put Beveraux away from the 4 big cities (NY, Philly, Boston, D.C.), so I put it in Maine. If there were any other location for Staunton other than where it's at, I'd put it in just south of D.C. around Norfolk.

This is getting insanely good. I have to know how you managed to make the water reflect. The way I do it is use a different program altogether for rendering but I prefer the clarity in sketchup renders. Any chance you could tell your secret? ;)

And btw, your textures are great! I still haven't made any for my dubai 3d but I've gone over 1000 buildings now so would probably need a supercomputer to do it

Staunton from the South
Havent shown much from the south, which turns out to be one of Staunton's best viewpoints.
http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/1064/000001fj1.jpg

this shows just how huge the skyline is, just imagine a couple of highrises, mostly midrises & rowhomes, stuff like that, in the empty wasteland.

Nice work Pat. That bridge certainly has a powerful effect on the skyline. I tend to deemphasize my own. It is nice to see that as your city has grown bigger you still have managed to give it more character. Bravo!

City Hall Is Back

Oh yes, after all this time, one of Staunton's most important buildings finally returns. Along with a new park. The City Hall's Location is moved to a much more prominent spot. The Park now had awsome views, if the City Hall had been placed where it was orginally destined to be, the park would not be able to exist (to close to Staunton Square) and the Orange Financial Building (Big Black box to the left) would have blocked most of the views to the North.

Unfortunantly, the City Hall has replaced Stauntons second creation, The Koster & Associates Towers. It incertian if the three towers will return.

Here is an intresting look on how some of the buildings of Staunton have advanced over time.

I need to check in on this thread more often! Between the better buildings/textures and the cleaner renders, this city looks awfully realistic now.. I mean some of the pictures on the last few pages are simply breathtaking!

BRAVO

Thanks! I'll have more time for Staunton this week this my (place angry word here) grounded me from hanging out with friends.

So yeah.

PREVIEW:
Staunton Park area completely redone. Now has more midrise buildings and much more realalistic. Staunton Park area is almost done, still needs more adjustments though.

Whoah!
I'm really glad to see the low and midrises appearing in your city, Patrick - it lends a much more credible appearance to Staunton to have a fair number of buildings that are less than a dozen storeys high. I'd love to see a shot looking along the waterfront under the approaches to the bridge, looks like an interesting area.

Spechless, it's just extremely amazing.
I think it was something with the light in those shots.
