Naw focus on your west side neighbourhood first.

Strathcona is pretty much downtown adjacent, should have been developed a long time ago. Imagine if Project 200 had gone ahead, there would have been a high density neighbourhood similar to the West End in place decades ago.

There's a lot of heritage in Strathcona but there's also a lot of more newer infill/Vancouver Specials etc. I mean the existing public housing coops would probably be the best sites and they are closest to transit. You also have the No 1 firehall possibly leaving and the huge community garden if you really wanted to build hospital focused housing.

How about we compromise, in exchange for removing the heritage registrations in Strathcona we also remove the heritage registrations in the West Side. Pretty fair if you ask me.

Or anywhere outside of Chinatown and Gastown.

Where did you hear about this? Wasn't the whole point of the temporary fire hall that the halls in the area were under strain, why would No 1 hall be leaving?

There was a report earlier this year to Council that identified problems with the existing headquarters, that are part of Firehall #1. The location is compromised by the rail tracks (as the Prior Street underpass is on indefinite hiatus) and the current building is not to seismic code any more - far from ideal for a firehall. However, there's no plan to relocate the building yet, or any financing in the current capital budget.

If/when a replacement location is confirmed, it would almost certainly be larger. The temporary firehall that was proposed for Gore is exactly that, urgently needed, and temporary. If/when Firehall #1 was relocated, it should be big enough to replace the existing hall, and any interim temporary hall.

St Paul's pic from the same article:

and equivalent view rendering.
There are more windows in the as-built than the rendering.

There's a drilling rig in front of the hospital now, so presumably the excavation for the Research Block will get goiung soon.

End of year update:
Quote:
Huge progress was made in 2024 to bring our new hospital and campus closer to reality. 2025 is shaping up to be another jam-packed year. Here's what you can expect:

New St. Paul's Hospital
Now that we've built the hospital's 11-storey structure, work on the interior and exterior continues.

Exterior completes: Terracotta panelling, windows, wooden entrance canopies, etc. will be installed.
Interior work: Wiring, painting, wall protection installation continues. Large, integrated equipment and furniture will also start to be installed.
Landscaping: Work on the Wellness Walk, Traditional Medicine Garden, and other green spaces will begin.
Full-scale mock-ups: Select rooms will be built inside the new hospital. These rooms will have real walls, flooring and fixtures so teams can do a final check before the rest of the rooms are constructed.

Clinical Support & Research Centre (CSRC)
The state-of-the-art hub for innovation and research is greeting the new year with an exciting milestone – construction kick-off! This is thanks to the incredible work done in 2024 where we rapidly advanced through building design, including modern workspaces, research labs, the Innovation Centre, and a childcare facility.

Construction progress: Work on site has begun, with bulk excavation set to begin in July.
Ongoing design and engagement: Design work will continue into the summer.
Permit updates: Providence and the City of Vancouver are continuing to work together to issue the CSRC Development Permit and Building Permit Stage 1 by February 2025.
