Jiangmen City, also known as Siyi and Wuyi 1, is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province. It is located in the south central part of Guangdong Province, the lower reaches of the Xijiang River, and the west of the the Pearl River Delta. It is adjacent to Shunde District, Zhongshan City, and Doumen District of Foshan City in the east, Yangdong County and Yangchun City of Yangjiang City in the west, Xinxing County, Gaoming District, and Nanhai District of Yunfu City in the north, the South China Sea in the south, and Hong Kong and Macao in the west. As of 2023, the total land area of the city is 9535 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, the city's permanent population was 4.8222 million. As of August 31, 2021, Jiangmen City has jurisdiction over 3 districts and manages 4 county-level cities. It is a national civilized city, a national forest city, an excellent tourist city in China, and a national garden city.
There are 45 well-known schools in Jiangmen City, including Wuyi University and Guangdong Jiangmen Vocational College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. At the end of 2022, there were 1767 medical and health institutions (including various outpatient clinics) in the city.
During the pre Qin period, Jiangmen belonged to the territory of Nanyue. In the Han Dynasty, the areas of Jiangmen City, Heshan, and Taishan belonged to Nanhai Commandery, while Enping and Kaiping belonged to Hepu Commandery. At the beginning of the Sui Dynasty, the province merged with the prefecture and renamed Xinhui prefecture as a state. In 1902, Britain forced the Qing government to sign the "Sino British Continuation of the Treaty of Commerce and Shipping", which established Jiangmen as a foreign trade port and set up customs accordingly. In 1925, Jiangmen was designated as a provincial city.
