Met the crew to try a BBQ place we heard about in Winthrop. This gave me a chance to do some quick exploration of Blue Line neighborhoods that are relatively unknown to me. I took these pictures while on quick exits from some of the Blue Line T Stations on the way out. Must go back and explore further.
Maverick T Station is the first stop I made:

Orient Heights T Station - rugged old thing, but cool. Didn't venture far from the station this time, but will at a later date:
Beachmont - At this point, we are no longer in Boston, but in a neighborhood of Revere. I was fascinated by the tower on the Beachmont T Station:
Revere Beach - Sun, Sand & Surf. Well, not today:
And now to Winthrop and my reward - the best BBQ I have had since moving to New England:
Excellent! I'm loving all your Boston area photo tours, Expat. We never see Eastie here on SSP, and I admit I've barely visited these areas myself. I didn't even know Maverick had such a nice square.
Looks like you made it to Revere Beach! Blue Line has some interesting parts, often over-looked, glad you made it off the typical Boston "beaten path".
Great shots! I've wondered for a while why the Orient Heights station has not been rebuilt. I believe it is the only one remaining on the line that has not had a complete do over.
I couldn't believe that was Maverick station. It used to be such an old barn down there.
Thanks for the comments. I have been to Revere Beach before, but never to Maverick. Never heard of Maverick until a few months ago. The station was nicely done. Especially liked the way it anchors Maverick Square, a neighborhood with many interesting streetscapes & handy location. Will explore further.

Being curious about the Maverick name, I did a little research. Maverick Square is named after the Maverick family who received the land (1,000 acres) through a grant in 1633 & lived there for generations.
There appears to be some relation between the Mavericks of Boston and the famed Maverick clan of Texas - but my quick research cannot confirm. It was the Texas Maverick that refused to brand his cattle and caused the term 'Maverick' to come about in describing a non-conformist.

Awesome! Great to see these neighborhoods, even (especially?) with the mountains of snow. Next time you head to Orient Heights, hike up to that Madonna Shrine (in the background of your first Orient Heights pic) for some nice panoramic views.
Also I like that you've gone from a T station with ridiculously narrow platforms (Lechmere) in your previous thread to one with ridiculously huge platforms (Maverick) here. I think the tracks at Maverick are so far apart because there is or was a loop just beyond, but a bigger transit geek would have to confirm that.
Sick! I haven't been to Eastie in a long, long time. Revere is such a surreal place. I can't tell if I hate it or love it. Most of the town is a shithole, but then you get these weird South Beach-esque views and nothing beats the original Kelly's Roast Beef! Revere Beach, BTW, is the first public beach in the nation and rivaled Coney Island in its heyday.

JBoston - I know what you mean about Revere Beach. My niece from Newton was not amused when she heard I went to RB the first time. "Uncle, nobody goes to Revere Beach". She wasn't being funny, she was quite serious & truly unhappy with me. Not my favorite beach, but it is what it is. There is something satisfying about getting a roast beef sandwich at Kelly's, sitting in the pavilion for sea gull & people watching. And being an easy subway ride away doesn't hurt.
