Rotterdam

Rotterdam was the first city we hit in the Netherlands, and was my favourite Dutch city of the two we stopped in, I'd still like to see The Hague and Utrecht.

Thanks guys.

Yeah wisla, I found that quite comical as well. The Calgary Tower's taller than anything in Rotterdam, but it looks pathetic next to the ESB.

Great photos, but did you seriously like Rotterdam better than Amsterdam?

I know I might be a little biased having lived in Amsterdam for the past two years, but Rotterdam - while certainly having interesting architecture - always struck me as a somewhat odd city without a personality.

Maybe it's where I went in Amsterdam, but it was absolutely crawling with tourists, which got a little tiresome. It's the same reason I didn't go to Florence, which may have been a mistake, but I had heard horror stories about the crowds there as well.

I see what you're saying about Rotterdam though, maybe if I spent more than three days there it would get a bit dull, I don't know.

Absolutely awesome!

Wow, your pics make the city look almost cartoonlike. A nice contrast would be a thread picturing the raw streetlife of the city.

Great job, 10/10!

haha, don't let them hear you in R'dam. They think they have the most "personality" of any Dutch city and in a way it's true.

And to think people here think it is the most American city of the area.

That's what I thought when I was there. Definitely not architecturally, I don't think there's any city that looks quite like Rotterdam. But in built form it felt a lot more North American than the other cities in Europe.

Thank you. Maybe Troyeth will have one, it seems our trip's were/are very similar. We've both posted Brussels and Antwerp threads, and his location indicates that he's in the Netherlands, though I'm not sure which city.

not a 'pretty' city but a very interesting one none-the-less.

He's in Groningen, way up north.

Could you tell us a bit more about your impression of Rotterdam. Did you take a tour of the (inner) port?

Also did you see this:

But his pics show all the pretty parts...

But you mean pretty in the sense of old buildings and churches probably, right?

Goes to show the differences in perception, because a lot of people will think the Rotterdam as shown in these pictures is extremely pretty and well organised.

I loved the port tour, makes me wish I did more tours in these cities, because if you walk around on your own you don't really learn anything about the city. I guess Rotterdam may not be "pretty", but it's absolutely unique.

Of all the cities I visited, there is very few that I wouldn't return to (Venice is one, it's quite nice, but I think I saw everything I needed).
I would like to go back to almost all of them, preferably for longer than two or three days, so I could experience them to a fuller extent.

Oops.

Nevermind, for some reason I thought the Calgary Tower was only 162 m.

I should mention that the day before we left, BEAT42 PM'd me and offered to give me a tour. We were just going to Amsterdam next so we ended up spending that last day in Rotterdam, and he did just that.
He obviously doesn't come on SSP much, but I should thank him for the tour.

yeah. it's not paris or prague because it is so eclectic with an anything goes vibe. someone mentioned it lacks an identity, i think that couldn't be further from the truth. but then again, new york and london aren't pretty either.

It has been a while since I visited SSP.
It's wierd, but I had this feeling I should do it and today I did.
What a surprise it was to see all your pictures you posted so far of your European Trip.
You are an excellent photographer, really! I like all of you pictures.
I'm glad you liked R'dam. It was a pleasure to take you around for a short tour.
Hope you enjoyed your trips.
Cheers
