I walked down through River North to check out the latest developments and explore its evolving character. My journey begins in Lincoln Park through Old Town and into River North. Very Gloomy WeatherEnjoy...
Not to be confused with Old Town Triangle, Old town roughly starts at the intersection of Lincoln, Wells, and Clark. Wells south to Division is the commercial strip. Then you go through a transition zone between Division and Chicago. Gold Coast is to the East and Cabrini Green is directly to the west. At Chicago Ave south to the river you are basicaly in River North.

Old Town Marker - This is the commercial strip. "Old Town Triangle is the residential part of Old Town where you will find some of the most intiguing and well preserved neighborhood streets in Chicago - That will be another thread
Second City Detail
I am not a fan of gated communities in Chicago. These are springing up everywhere in the City

The worst land developers: Moody Bible Inst - Killed the area with their parking lots. This is probably the most interesting part of the campus

Street Character - not that great between Division and Chicago
River North
River North is a quickly evolving area of new towers, warehouse conversions, and redevelopment. Just to the North, Cabrini Green is undergoing a phased development. Its an interesting area because you have low income housing projects on one side of the street and million dollar homes on the other side of the street.

I like this building
Its interesting how the mechanical system shows through the top
I don't understand these mansions. Right in the City. I think they totally suck
Nice street-level tour.
Probably the most contextually-challenged part of Chicago. The charming side streets of Old Town lead to the utterly charmless North Ave. Some of the best urban housing and most intrusive suburbanisms can be found around here. This tour captured the jarring transitions well.
Wow - It is one thing to see the National Geographic tour of Tibet or Turkey - but Chicago ! I travel those streets and have never quite seen some of those angles.

Nice thread. I've made that walk as well.
You should put this one in the 300 N LaSalle thread. It's a good shot.

Stunning thread, you have great little-seen angles in there. I love how your pictures really immerse us in the urban environment -- best street-level River North thread I can remember.
excellent route for those unusual views everybody is talking about here. hitting that western fringe of the near north side from Old Town through the area around the north branch before it hits the main channel created some fantastic scenery. Loved the shots of those crazy, wimsical townhouses across from the mart; they pretty much there at the start when the north branch suddenly became hot property and facing the river was better than turning its back to it (like the East Bank Club).
Also..never saw a pano shoot from Wolf Point before...nice touch.
You basically captured my daily walk to work and, more importantly, my daily walk home. You caught so many of those odd little vignettes that always make me pause and think, 'God, this is a really gorgeous city.'
Keep taking us on your tours. They're really brilliant.
whats wrong with the mansions. they only add diversity to the area. a range of building types and income levels in neighbourhoods is a great thing to have. and hey, at least they live near downtown instead of 30 miles away
