What an eye sore. It looks like someone with a box of odd lego blocks designed the thing.

I quite like it. I think it's interesting and fits the area fairly well.

This is the ugliest building addition to ever appear in Yaletown. I was speechless when the design came out, and I am still speechless now.

Only Vancouver can approve such an abomination of architecture.

Ah 10 years from now no one will remember. Call me the odd duck, but I like it.

City is seeking injunction over 1046 Granville St (Regal Hotel).

Come on now, you're never speechless.

It's fine. I agree with the above, nobody will care in a few years.

I agree with Vin here. I get the school of thought that an addition should be clearly delineated from the original building, but this not only overpowers the original, it looks like it is squashing it into the ground.

I think 564 Beatty works better.

should've made it black, if not mostly glass (to contrast the solid masonry). Even if they got the colours to match the brick (how on earth did they fuck that up), it would've been worse for heritage value. A setback would've helped lessen the ridiculousness of the cornice. Should've cantilevered those floors like 564 Beatty rather than expose the columns.

Over two years later, and judging by next week's council agenda 1450 W Georgia should have an October public hearing.

Here's the referral report

Live From New York, it's Vancouver's Urban Design Panel!!!

Search For Hidden Mountain Pathway Chips Away At Refined Addition To Vancouver’s Skyline

1616-1698 W Georgia St (DP-2021-00409)
I imagine whoever forgot to let this applicant team know the previous item on this Urban Design Panel meeting’s agenda had been cancelled felt a little embarrassed during the 20-minute delay that followed. That this world-renowned architect was willing to drop what they were doing to log in well ahead of schedule might be a sign of our city’s growing global importance. Then again, what flashed on screen was a dose of reality, and brought gasps from these volunteers.

With no time to make it to the office, they paused their early access tour of One Vanderbilt’s SUMMIT, giving us all a view of New York City’s skyline from its tallest office building. In comparison, the heights of Vancouver’s West End are humble, yet thanks to their unique styles the structures along the West Georgia Corridor have won international recognition, and awards. However, this review would determine whether this North Shore-inspired design had been refined enough to join them.

They could have easily taken a scan of the brick on the original building and made the New building look exactly the same without using brick.

But another reason they might have kept the new look is from a financial pov. They are more likely to attract a higher market price with a new building than one that looks older.

The Yaletown addition is the same shape and height as the original.

It looks like a bland color box stacked on top.

Though it would reduce leasable space, and likely kill the proforma. The additional should be narrower and slightly taller, better delineated from the original building below.

That said, it doesn't really matter. No one will remember a project this scale in a few weeks.

Seems like it will be more abstract photos of his buildings than just his portrait

I like the current building at 1450 West Georgia, I don't like seeing buildings of this size getting knocked down, especially when they are almost heritage at this point. Inside the units were so interesting too, I had a friend who lived there. And there are a LOT of units... Replacing with this just seems wrong for such a massive building takedown. Like the Empire Landmark demolition, to be replaced with two short generic blobs. Granted, the 1450 tower is tall, and if it was replacing some 3 story crap then I wouldn't mind, but the existing just seems like it should stay. It'd be like taking down the Electra building instead of rehabiliatating it the way they did, now it's almost like a landmark. I know 1450 isn't that iconic, but it's an important piece of architecure from that time. Maybe I am in the minority, but this seems like a net loss for me. I know the new tower is tall, but the current building was striking in it's own way
