I wish it were made out of white, flecked granite. Better than concrete, bright, with a natural link to the local cliffs and peaks. White is elegant. This building would do better with it, IMHO

Not to forget it must be broken up into "human scale" facades.

Makes me laugh that it received high praise and accolade from the UDP, but yeah, I'm glad it passed too.

Or you could create the IRobot version for glass cleaning and get the tower's developers to be your first client.

Not a bad idea. Most of the cost of that stuff is fall protection, insurance, and so on. The actual work is easy. Maybe a series of drones...

I seem to recall that a system like that already exists, automated window cleaning system that is. Might have been featured on one of those "documentary" channels.

It's funny after all these decades 3/4 corners of the intersection are under construction at the exact same time

Perhaps because a mall that includes office towers are being built? Businesses love large anchors nearby.

1450 West Georgia Street - Open House

Like a Hidden Grove – Georgian Towers Replacement Embraced by a Diversity of Voices

1450 West Georgia Street
Of all the open house venues in the West End, The Westin Bayshore is far from Darren and I’s favourite. While the hotel is certainly luxurious, the treats cannot compare to those provided at The Listel Hotel, and even the old Empire Landmark Hotel has its own charm. However, the proposals displayed here are almost always extremely impressive.

Clearly, we are not the only ones who feel that way, as the public reaction to this proposal’s pre-application event was so positive it seems only a few minimal changes were needed. For instance, the landscape and plaza have been slightly rearranged to create a better, more prominent public experience. It is great to see the amount of retail space has been increased too, as it might make this key ceremonial street more friendly to walk along.

Okay, I can't figure this out. Yesterday (Saturday) Homer Street between Georgia and Dunsmuir was all closed down with what looked like a major crane assembly going on. Today it was all gone. I'm not sure what was done.

I don't see much difference (from Tuesday to Sunday) from this angle.

Maybe they had a problem mid-way through the removal of those beams? It was supposed to last from May 17-20

Assume it's too much work to disassemble it in the air so they'll just lower it to the ground.

That specific crane has been used around town a few times and almost always seems to be for lifting HVAC systems onto towers. I think they probably had to install some new equipment in the older building. They usually use the blue or white ones for demolition and or a crane install. Maybe the company that owns these red cranes specialize in lifting special equipment. I imagine they will have a smaller crane for the demo work.

Okay, I'm going to presume that's what happened. I took the pics below about 1:15 PM on Saturday.

They drilled all those holes in the panels, so I thought they'd lower the panels one by one.

Now it looks like the scaffolding will support the underlying steel frame.

Maybe removing the cladding revealed some weaknesses (corrosion?) in the steel frame so it needs support?

I think you're correct. And there's no steel beam yet under the left side so it was probably unrelated to the crane.
