This is the ugliest building addition to ever appear in Yaletown. I was speechless when the design came out, and I am still speechless now.

Only Vancouver can approve such an abomination of architecture.

I agree with Vin here. I get the school of thought that an addition should be clearly delineated from the original building, but this not only overpowers the original, it looks like it is squashing it into the ground.

should've made it black, if not mostly glass (to contrast the solid masonry). Even if they got the colours to match the brick (how on earth did they fuck that up), it would've been worse for heritage value. A setback would've helped lessen the ridiculousness of the cornice. Should've cantilevered those floors like 564 Beatty rather than expose the columns.

However, this review would determine whether this North Shore-inspired design had been refined enough to join them.

They could have easily taken a scan of the brick on the original building and made the New building look exactly the same without using brick.

But another reason they might have kept the new look is from a financial pov. They are more likely to attract a higher market price with a new building than one that looks older.

Part of what doesn't work is scale. 546 Beatty offers a much more pleasing perspective of scale difference between old and new.

The Yaletown addition is the same shape and height as the original.

It looks like a bland color box stacked on top.

Though it would reduce leasable space, and likely kill the proforma. The additional should be narrower and slightly taller, better delineated from the original building below.

That said, it doesn't really matter. No one will remember a project this scale in a few weeks.

I'm all in favour of these events for our city, but having Arthur's face projected onto his building, makes it look like he went a few rounds with Mike Tyson ( broken teeth and all), plus is he giving us the finger..?!

He's probably still pissed on how we can't get past the table top for our city!

I like the current building at 1450 West Georgia, I don't like seeing buildings of this size getting knocked down, especially when they are almost heritage at this point. Inside the units were so interesting too, I had a friend who lived there. And there are a LOT of units... Replacing with this just seems wrong for such a massive building takedown. Like the Empire Landmark demolition, to be replaced with two short generic blobs. Granted, the 1450 tower is tall, and if it was replacing some 3 story crap then I wouldn't mind, but the existing just seems like it should stay. It'd be like taking down the Electra building instead of rehabiliatating it the way they did, now it's almost like a landmark. I know 1450 isn't that iconic, but it's an important piece of architecure from that time. Maybe I am in the minority, but this seems like a net loss for me. I know the new tower is tall, but the current building was striking in it's own way
