That green section with the arched windows is hideous. Not a fan of this building at all. Making the brickwork the same throughout with some patterned contrasts would've worked so much better. Looking at all the beautiful proposals of the suburb city centre buildings, this one looks all the more deplorable.

But if this looked like the condo towers in downtown Burnaby or Surrey... wouldn't all the towers in the Lower Mainland just look the same?

Notwithstanding a few details, this is by far the best proposal in terms of basic design and scale than anything in the Olympic Village or anywhere in the inner city in a potentially comparable neighbourhood.

They don't have to look the same, and they don't have to look ugly to satisfy the "human scale" criteria. Personally I think this one misses the mark on both. The stack box design isn't avant garde here.

I had been curious how long Big City would hold out for. You may not be able to get your car fixed in Vancouver soon, with so many repair shops being redeveloped... However, with the move to EV's and their much lower maintenance there may well not be a need for so many auto-repair shops.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on what will be the next OV development........? Not many sites left.

And there's always the giant city owned waterfront site between Cambie Bridge and Hinge Park/Future school beside OV.

Surely you aren't referring to the monstrous boxes that are Amazing Brentwood towers... but obviously your definition of beautiful = tall.

I agree architecture is subjective. What is the human scale criteria in this case though?

my bf says the Brentwood towers are some of his favourites as they are very sleek.

The city has a tendency to force developers to carve up their buildings to different smaller "sections" as they see fit. They don't like larger buildings with a single theme. I find that this one falls into that category, and it is the dumbest thing ever.

Lots of potential, but City policies do not generate a lot of interest here at OV when compared to the suburbs. The City-owned lot next to the Main Street Station should've been done like the Anvil Centre in New West, but with more retail. As you can see, it is still nothing but a sad-looking parking lot in such a prime intersection with a trans-national/US railway & coach station, and major skytrain station right at its doorstep. What a waste.

MA+HG took upon this design on their own though, without input from the City, and in fact going against the City's pre-prescribed "rules" (example being The Pinnacle at Ontario & 1st).

With the Arts Club at 1st and Columbia it would be interesting to see where new venues and funding in the area will be directed, but I think it'll go into False Creek Flats by Station St. Lots of moving pieces and great projects coming forward east of Main around 1st and 2nd aves

Vancouver rarely gets the colour thing right. It's either life-less grey clear-anodized, or some tacky unnatural colour that makes everything else seem even more colourless

I like the other colours except the blue. Then again, it is hard to know what shade they will be as the renderings are so washed out.

I think the opposite. To me, it looks like a child's drawing of a building - especially the curved windows. It reminds me of some 1990s post-modern buildings in Europe, but those architects grew up and do more sophisticated buildings these days. A couple of the buildings these architects have designed are contemporary, and for me work better (like 2525 Stephens). I think this post post-modern pile of boxes might have worked in a different location, but if it's built as illustrated will look very out of place in the SEFC context.
