Good question.
I think it's inevitable that the Cox Convention Center will be torn down and redeveloped -- at some point.
The bigger question is... when?
Right now, the general feeling about this is that the Cox building will stay for awhile.
I could see it hanging around for 3, 4, maybe even 5 years or more after the new convention center is built.
It could still serve subsidiary roles to the main convention center in the mean time.
The problem is how to redevelop all that area, when there's already a ton of space in the downtown core still available.
For example, the Ford site, just south of Myriad Gardens.
There's a glut of downtown office space at the moment, and already plenty of hotels being constructed or in the pipeline.
So likely, the city will just sit tight on that superstructure for awhile.
If nothing else, it provides nearly 1000 parking spaces downtown -- a precious commodity.
I don't say this with joy.
I'd love to see the old convention center taken down, and a half dozen new towers put in its place.
Just being realistic.
