What are the long term plans for the parking lots between Myriad Gardens and the new park to the south? Haven't been to OKC since 1991. Quite different.

Updated photos of Chisholm Creek:

In the third photo, the building under construction (next to Uncle Julio's) will be a Razzoo's Cajun Cafe.

In the last photo, prominant in the foreground, are several more restaurants under construction:

Immediately to the south of Razzoo's (already going vertical) will be a Chicken Salad Chick
Then next to it will be a Dominico (Coffee and Desserts)
Then, finally, a Slapfish

The large area of scraped earth behind all this will be a new hotel and several other buildings scheduled for Phase 2 of the project.

Unfortunately, nothing for the forseeable future.
Apparently the owners are quite content to leave it as an empty lot.

You have to use your imagination a bit to see the trees much taller and wider to get a feel for how nice and shady much of the park will be in upcoming years.

Virtual Sky - Convention Center Light Display

Back in the spring, it was announced that the Convention Center was to have a large art piece based on a creative light display.

It would consists of LED lights suspended by cables in front of the two (park facing) glass atriums.
These lights would change color throughout the day in a dynamic fashion.

It was announced yesterday that the commission had been given to Susan Narduli.
Her business is Narduli Studios which is based in California.

The art piece is called "Virtual Sky".

Slender, sleek anodized titanium forms will be suspended by aircraft cables in each of the two multi-story atriums facing west across Robinson Avenue.
The gleaming forms will capture the natural light pouring in across the downtown skyline.

Small LED lights will also add color to the piece.
The lights can be programmed for specific patterns, and can also change based on real-time data inputs to reflect the changing sky.

Rother Shrine

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oklahoma City began a campaign last year for a shrine to Stanley Rother.

Rev. Stanley Rother is the first U.S. born male and U.S. priest named a martyr by the Roman Catholic Church.
Rother, from Okarche Oklahoma, was murdered in Guatamala in 1981 while doing missionary work.

Rother was beatified on September 23, 2017, during a Mass at the Cox Convention Center.

The proposed shrine will feature a 2,000 seat church.
This would make it the largest Catholic church in Oklahoma.

The archdiocese purchased Brookside Golf Club, which is located at SE 89th and Shields Boulevard, several years ago.
This 53-acre plot will be the site where the shrine is built.

According to an Oklahoman article, by the fall of 2018, fundraising has already surpassed the required $65 million goal.
The site was designed so that the shrine would be easily visible (and accessed) from I-35.

^^^ I am very excited about that. It will be nice to have a high profile church like the Rother Shrine and could be one of the most significant ones in the country. I wonder if OKC will see a visit from the Pope to bless the church.

The Hub at Midtown

A six story mixed-use building is being proposed for the corner of NW 13th and Broadway.

The developers seem to be undecided about exactly what to call the new project.
I've already seen it described as "The Hub", "The Hub on Broadway" or "The Hub at Midtown".

Regardless of what it is called, this will be great infill for the area.

Location:

This is a 3.5 acre lot.
The Garage Loft Apartments, adjacent to the site, is not part of the development.

The site is immediately to the west of a large 13.7 acre parcel that is currently up for sale.

The availabililty of the large parcel - enclosed by the red lines - was created by the Dolese Bros. relocation.

To the west - enclosed by the blue lines - is the 3.5 acre lot that is being developed by Core Bank.

CoreBank has had a sign posted on this lot for quite awhile.

Pete at OKCTalk had already hinted that Core Bank was likely to move into this spot themselves.
Finally, their vision for the site has been revealed:

The proposed six story building will house the main branch and corporate offices of Core Bank.
It will have retail - and a drive thru for the bank - on the ground floor.

The five stories above that will be Class-A office space.
They are pre-leasing already.

There is also a plan to build apartments on the site.
A parking garage for this would be built inside the complex, away from the street view.

No further info has been offered about the apartments.
This would be a future phase of the development... hopefully they do get built.

That is a very interesting speculation....

I don't know that much about the Catholic Church or the papacy.
But a visit from the Pope for the shrine's official opening -- that sounds within the realm of possibility.

I mean, probably not. But then again... you never know.

Can you imagine that situation?
The sheer bulk of media coverage that the Pope gets every time he visits the U.S. is amazing.
A mass of journalists from around the world would descend onto OKC.
It would be wild.

New Distillery and Brewpub at NW 1st and Western

Oklahoma Distilling Company is opening a new distillery and brewpub at NW 1st and Western in downtown OKC.
This is a new company formed in Tulsa in 2017.

They distill several spirits including:

Indian Grass Vodka
1907 Oklahoma Whiskey
59 Shine Smoked Rye
Rose Rock Rum

They also brew mead and cider.
When was the last time you had mead, my friend?

So apparently, the two buildings will be kept, but renovated.
In fact, work has already started:

The current facade - some type of stucco - is being scraped off of the long thin building to reveal the original brick underneath.
This will become a tasting room.

The site will also include a small restaurant -- no word yet on the type of offerings.
Standard pub grub, I would assume.

Oklahoma Distilling Company has already collaborated with Stonecloud.
Their '1907 Oklahoma Whiskey' is based on an Indian pale ale (specifically, astrodog ipa) obtained from Stonecloud.

Perhaps their close locations will result in more collaborations.

I-235 / I-44 Interchange Reconstruction

ODOT (Oklahoma Department of Transportation) has several large highway projects in the works for the OKC metro.

One of the most significant at the current time is the work on I-235.
Specifically, at the I-44 interchange.

This interchange is currently in the process of a major overhaul.
ODOT describes the goal of the project as "improving one of the worst bottlenecks for traffic in the state."

This reconstruction will widen I-235/US-77 to six lanes between N. 50th St. and N. 63rd St and will feature a four-level interchange.

A total of 11 bridges will be constructed - including two new flyover ramps:

from northbound I-235 to westbound I-44
from eastbound I-44 to northbound I-235/US-77

The tallest flyover ramp will be 70 feet in height.

Once the flyover ramps are constructed, the two cloverleaf ramps for those movements will be eliminated.
The two remaining cloverleaf ramps will be widened and reconstructed.

Flower Child

The health food restaurant chain Flower Child is opening a location in Oklahoma City.
This is at NW 63rd and Grand Blvd, next to the Classen Curve shopping center.

The restaurant has an emphasis on the use of organic and gluten-free ingredients.
Many offerings are vegan or vegetarian, altough they also have salmon, steak, and chicken.

Flower Child started in Phoenix and has expanded to a number of states.
Texas has locations in Dallas, Austin, and Houston.
This will be the first for Oklahoma City.
