There are 100 ways to get to India from YYC, so the same minimum pax metrics for long haul don't apply.

For YYC-HKG/China the minimum pax is over 100,000 pax. For India, I would venture the minimum is well over 150,000.

Does Aeromexico still serve Calgary at all? For some reason I thought they operated on a seasonal basis? Or that Westjet took over their route? I told my friend they did since they were going to MEX, and they said there was no direct flights available. Is this old news? Sorry I wasn't going to go through all the pages, but for some reason thought YYC was still served by either one of those airlines, even seasonally?

WS dropped the route last October. AeroMexico resumed service back in May but was only in the summer. I'm not sure if they plan to come back in S20 though.

Sadly Mexico City is a very difficult route to profit on, WJ isn't the only airline to give it up after a year as a few US carriers have also had to axe it.
Seeing a city 24million strong would presume a bustling market for a business or even tourism but I guess there must be some kind of cultural or societal disconnect that hampers the synergy needed to attract two way plane loads of people, especially in the front cabins.
One article I read it said that alot of mexicans still prefer the old fashioned way of booking flights using the airline's ticketing office located in various places in the city versus the internet. WJ or any of the US carriers would have to ramp up their marketing and open up some local offices with full spanish speaking staff and services that caters to the mexican locale in order to gain some brand awareness ontop of promoting Calgary and Alberta as a whole as a travel destination. Code share would be another thing to time in convienient connections to other cities such as the resort towns.
I for one would welcome more mexicans touring the rockies than the crazy busloads of mainland chinese folks who often have much to be desired for when it comes to civility..

1. Traffic in/out of MEX is heavily Mexican point of sale. That favours Mexican airlines right there to begin with, as Mexicans have a tendency to book with their own national airlines.
2. Southwest couldn’t make MEX work because of what I said above and also because the only place you can book southwest tickets is on the southwest.com website. A lot of Mexicans don’t know that and think all carriers can be booked on Expedia/Travelocity, etc. That’s not the case.
3. JetBlue had shitty slot times at MEX in the beginning. They got good ones later because of AM/DL JV approval and their requirement to give up slots, but they couldn’t compete, as they were sending Non-Mint configured A320s. Quite a lot of business traffic from the US to MEX, but you need to send the right aircraft. Alaska and Southwest had this problem as well. No proper business class.
4. AM/DL JV is hard to compete against.

That’s the story right there with US LCCs and MEX.

On another note, did BA just cut 3 or so weeks from next summers YYC schedule?

Yeah, BA reduced its schedule for next summer, but we've known this for a while now. It's also only 4x weekly in April as well.

Asia is a challenge because you need two airframes to operate a single route due to the flight times (unless you are not going daily). WS simply does not have enough aircraft right now.

NRT is about the same distance as FCO. But there they'd have a fight, and less of a niche as a mini-super connector.

Competition is also fierce. Western Canada to FCO is an unserved route, whereas Western Canada to Japan is over 8,200 seats per day in the summer, plus another 7,200 from Seattle and Portland.

So AM has cancelled YYC then? It is not available for booking in the summer, so it looks like it was dropped?

YYC-NRT-YYC can be done in under 24 hours, same with Seoul

I wonder if WS will ever to South America, either from YYC or YYZ. YYZ more likely I guess, but even then. I don't think economics of South America flights work well in general, except from NY, MIA, or LAX

Their map of “potential” 787 routes showed YVR-LIM/SCL/EZE and YYZ-GIG/GRU. I’m not sure there’s much of a market out of YYC for South America.

Looks like PDX has been upgauged to a CR9. Same number of seats, but jet so faster, and of course J.

Guessing with the influx of CR9s and decrease in CRJ100/200s and DH4s we will see other routes upgauge. Wonder if this is to protect the route from WS. Good on AC if so, they've been retreating for years.

YYZ belongs in that short list.

Westjet pushing back Hawaii flying again into Feb now with the Max being pulled from January schedules. With no clear solution yet this may in fact impact the entire winter sched.

Wow the YEG-HNL schedule as it stands now is so sparse. It is literally 10 flights for an entire season, starting Feb. 8th and ending April 11, 1 weekly flight. That is really bizarre
