1. Traffic in/out of MEX is heavily Mexican point of sale. That favours Mexican airlines right there to begin with, as Mexicans have a tendency to book with their own national airlines.
2. Southwest couldn’t make MEX work because of what I said above and also because the only place you can book southwest tickets is on the southwest.com website. A lot of Mexicans don’t know that and think all carriers can be booked on Expedia/Travelocity, etc. That’s not the case.
3. JetBlue had shitty slot times at MEX in the beginning. They got good ones later because of AM/DL JV approval and their requirement to give up slots, but they couldn’t compete, as they were sending Non-Mint configured A320s. Quite a lot of business traffic from the US to MEX, but you need to send the right aircraft. Alaska and Southwest had this problem as well. No proper business class.
4. AM/DL JV is hard to compete against.
That’s the story right there with US LCCs and MEX.
On another note, did BA just cut 3 or so weeks from next summers YYC schedule?
