I'm wondering if it's more than one route as there is a full frame available and I can't see any European routes that could be served daily.

Yeah, and we still don't know what's going on with the 763s. There's 4 of them and only one route (YYZ-BCN) for summer.

Could also include increased frequencies to existing routes like CDG, or YYZ-BCN could also be a 787.

Yeah, my theory is an increase of CDG to 6x weekly and a new sub-daily seasonal European route.

That makes a lot of sense. CDG goes on its own, and a new airport to pair with DUB frame.

Article in the Calgary Herald:

Faster security screening arrives at Calgary International Airport
https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-new...ves-at-yyc-calgary-international-airport

Quote:
Pre-boarding gridlock at the airport should be eased by the addition of a new domestic flight screening location, says the Calgary International Airport Authority.

Starting today, the new pre-boarding security area — at Concourse B — should reduce waiting times. Previously, there were 10 security lines open at Concourses A and C. The opening of the new area means there will now be 13 lines available, during the busiest times of the day.

Two of the new lines will be regular lines and the third will be prioritizing families and special access. They will be staffed from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday to Friday. (When the area at Concourse B isn’t open, the lines at Concourses A and C will be open, as usual.)

“We know guests have had long waits at peak times to be screened for domestic flights and this additional location will help increase capacity and make travel faster and easier,” said Chris Miles, vice-president of operations with the authority.

That big Westjet announcement is coming on Wednesday. Seemingly a new route for the 787. Most likely being to BCN but there's also a small shot that it could be to FCO

Looks like it’s FCO 3x weekly. Already bookable.

Also CDG was increased to 6x weekly.

So as it currently stands European operations next summer will consist of:

AMS - 1 daily (KL)
LHR - 2 daily (AC and BA)
LGW - 1 daily (WS)
CDG - 6x weekly (WS)
DUB - 3x weekly (WS)
FCO - 3x weekly (WS)
ZRH - 2 weekly (LX)
FRA - 11x weekly (AC and DE)

Impressive! 53 weekly flights to 8 airports (7 cities)

The next step for WS will hopefully be making CDG year round.

It’s actually 52 as Condor is only 3 weekly next summer. So exact same frequencies per week as this summer as WestJet kicks Transat out of YYC.

Like I said, clearly targeted at all of western Canada, as YVR has no non-stop to FCO. They're really betting it all on YYC. Wish them the best of luck.

Whenever I ask other commentators about why AC doesn't give YYC more destinations, I always get "why, and weaken their YVR hub?"

For AC, YVR is their primary hub, and YYC is a secondary hub. For WS, this is reversed - YYC is the primary hub, YVR is secondary. Last year before the grounding WS had hourly flights to YYC from YVR (16x daily) so the intent was pretty clear. Growing YVR for TATL as this point beyond LGW seems highly unlikely as it would weaken YYC, and YYC's traffic is growing based on connections. And yes, I would expect WS is expecting connecting traffic from YVR to fill FCO. YYC also has a geographical advantage over YVR for TATL.

See:
https://calgaryherald.com/business/local...ecord-earnings-despite-boeing-groundings

Ed Sims says:
“We’ve seen significant connecting traffic from major cities in the U.S. now using Calgary as their preferred transit hub,” Sims said, adding he has no regrets about the company’s decision to make Calgary home base for the Dreamliner program. “We’ve seen very significant growth from Seattle, from San Francisco, from all points in the Pacific Northwest.”

WS is taking a page from AC's playbook, which is to capture a small percentage of U.S. traffic to fill the planes. AC has been been very successful at this. This is why we've seen some odd transborder launches in YYC that YVR doesn't have (e.g. AUS or PDX) - these are larger American airports with limited TATL service. These routes are to feed the international operations.

What will be interesting is what WS now intends to do with the 4 additional frames arriving in 2021, and if they intend to exercise options. My best guess is we will see more launches in the east in 2021 out of YYZ. YVR will come into play for Asia, when they launch Asia (which is not anytime soon at the moment). There's way higher O&D and geographical advantage. If WS launches Asia out of YYC it will be probably one route, perhaps HKG or TYO, or ICN if they get a JV with KE.

If they exercise options, then things get very interesting. But before then in the west, I don't see WS growing much international TATL out of YVR, with the possible exception of extending LGW year-round. But I don't see that happening until LGW is firmly daily year round at YYC.

As I mentioned on the Canada thread, I am still surprised Asia is such a challenge. I would've thought an Asian route from YYC would be more popular than FCO, even with connecting pax. Especially with AMS, FRA, CDG, and LON all covered, FCO is really more O&D (the SE Europe comment is kind of laughable, FRA is a better connecting airport for this).

I have no doubt in my mind Asia will come with time. The flood of transpacific capacity in recent years, largely due to the mainland Chinese carriers, has ruined yields for many airlines. WS is likely waiting until the market corrects itself before stepping in.

Don't we also have a reasonable demand for a direct flight to India as well? I remember seeing somewhere the demand from YYC is ~55,000 PAX per year to DEL which could easily be 3 flights per week. Although I suppose that is really far out of the question atm.

If DEL could fill the premium cabins ... but it comes down to the problem of visiting friends and family as a source of demand. And people prioritizing price. Also the ease of transferring via the ME3 so you don't have to transfer within India. Add those up and you need a market much larger O&D since you'll only capture 1/10 th of it.
