No, he's not really, much of the city is in a pretty bad condition, primarily because the amount of infrastructure to maintain has grown relatively more than the increase in population and the tax base. Every year, particularly in spring, I notice more missing chunks of curb and boulevards that are not being maintained at all.

As for RT in the northeast, build a line down Henderson on a dedicated right of way in the middle of the roadway with signal preemption. That will achieve massively greater increases in ridership than a BRT down Gateway/Raleigh to All Seasons Estates and with minimal additional capital expenditure and savings in the long term. See Toronto's 510 Spadina, 512 St. Clair or the Twin Cities Green Line. The partial opening of the SWBRT in 2012 has not resulted in any ridership increase for the system. We'll see if I'm wrong, but I highly doubt that ridership increases will result after the full length of the line opens next year as apart from transporting students to and from the U of M, it services an area that largely does not have transit using demographics.

Yeah I remember by grandpa doing that when I was a kid. He otherwise would park next to a really nice car cause he knew they’d be careful.

I hate parking downtown. Stalls are so narrow. My vehicle has taken a few good scratches.

Without high density near stations a la TOD, I have no idea how transit was ever expecting to see a ridership increase. If you've got your own personal vehicle in Winnipeg, there's virtually nothing attractive in the least about bus or rail. Really... it would be a novelty for people who haven't already decided to leave their cars at home. At best, you might get people who want to give it shot once or twice for the hell of it. Public transit can be great but if it's not nearly as convenient as your own car, why would anybody bother?

Because you wanted to, or because all of the other spaces were full?

I'm not sure what the standards are but in the US it feels like spaces are way more generous. Never a problem in ND, for instance. Canadian spaces are much narrower. I saw a guy scrape his F150 but good trying to squeeze into a spot under Edmonton City Hall a couple weeks ago... parkades weren't designed for the modern obsession with large vehicles.

Evidence worldwide concludes that rail-based RT spurs TOD to a much greater extent than bus-based RT.

Are you suggesting that Winnipeg has a higher rate of car ownership than Calgary or Ottawa? Not likely.

Population x Winnipeg

Calgary 1.76
Ottawa 1.32

Transit daily ridership numbers x Winnipeg

Calgary 2.19
Ottawa 2.61

I didn't realize this until today but now I'm even more disillusioned about what this city is doing.

From Wikipedia:

"In March 2018, the (Quebec) City with the Government of Quebec announced the construction of a 23 km long tramway line for $ 3 billion. The line will link Charlesbourg to Cap-Rouge, passing through Quebec Parliament Hill. There will be a 3.5 km underground in this part. The service frequency will be 3 to 5 minutes in peak periods, 10 to 15 minutes during the day and weekend. Passenger capacity will be 260 per tramway. The Quebec City tramway should be in service in 2026".

That includes three river crossings including a crossing of the wide St. Lawrence as well as 3.5 km underground. A line of similar length (23 km, almost exactly the same as the length of a line from Unicity to Glenway and Henderson) in Winnipeg without any underground section would be perhaps half that cost, $1.5 to $2.0 billion tops. The 11 km BRT will come in at about $0.5 billion.

I could cry.

Even if the lot is empty. I have a 3 year old car and a 25 year old car, neither have a mark on them.

Where does the funding come from for $3 billion... I can't fathom how anyone here would come up with that sort of sash unless the feds paid for half and it was spread over like 10 years.

Not saying we shouldn't try, but damn. We get $2 mil for a transit garage. Next day Edmonton gets 1 billion for transit. Do our bureaucrats not ask or they're too scared or what.

There was a news story on this not long ago. They’re expecting $1.2B from the federal government. Problem is they only have $400M based on the transit funding which is based on ridership. So they’re $800m short. They’re talking of now building it in stages but the opposition saying if they do that they’ll never actually finish it.

More renderings should be out shortly. They are dealing with more asbestos than they had intended.

I'm not involved with the constructions business ( just a fan of Winnipeg development) but it seems like construction projects, especially large ones, are routinely unpredictable. I guess none of us should be too surprised when a project size, scope, etc. gets changed during it's development

Sounds like the solution here is to have some sort of paid "premium" parking for those who want a little more breathing room, rather than having 5 empty rows of wasted space in every lot in town. Pay a small fee, get an extra wide spot for your precious ride. No reason everyone else in society should have to provide a bunch of dead space for your personal use.

There's a construction elevator up the east side of the building on Smith,. They have the walls on the top 3 floors removed. I have a photo I can try to post at some point.
