Agreed.
It's an extension of the guideway, stations and control systems for that extension.
The rolling stock is supplied by TransLink (and any consequential changes necessitated by a new supplier of rolling stock on the system would be TransLink's responsibility)

That is common in most public tenders. It is not uncommon to see a spec that directs all the proponents to user certain parts or components for inter-penetrability.

^ Furthermore, rolling stock changes over time, so it is the core technical features that matter most: gauge, power requirement specs, power rail specs, train control technology, coupler specs, vehicle width/height/turning radii, platform height, door number and positioning (if platform doors are present), etc.

There really wouldn't be anything stopping trains from operating in the SkyTrain system with conventional traction motors, assuming that everything else is compatible. It wouldn't necessarily be wise to split motive power technologies, and the system's tight corners and steep grades may not be possible to achieve with conventional electric motors vs linear induction, but those might not be deal-breakers at some point in the future.

Furthermore, in the future, if a company other than Bombardier built fully-to-spec trains for the SkyTrain system, and licensed whatever proprietary technology would be required, there wouldn't be a reason why Translink couldn't use them. If CRRC, Siemens, Rotem, Tata, or whomever, offered a deal just too good to refuse on a new compatible train model in a competitively tendered fleet expansion order, Translink would be wise to consider it.

There are grades up to 6% on the skytrain system. I don't believe that's possible with conventional driven-wheel traction power.

On of the important differentiators of Skytrain's LIM technology is that propulsion and braking don't rely on wheel friction with the rails. There's simply no such thing as "wheel slip" with LIM motors. This means that grades, speeds, and acceleration/deceleration rates are independent of track conditions. It would be pretty difficult, perhaps impossible to mix this with conventional traction motor technology, certainly on the existing lines which were designed without the limitations that technology imposes.

too bad Canada Line isn't LIM traction power. that could help a bunch when those trains get stuck on the bridge between Bridgeport & Marine Drive

Inexplicably, our old friend Malcom Johnson is being quoted in an opinion piece in the Sun today. I'm not going to link to the piece because I don't want the Sun to get views, thereby validating their continued engagement with that polemicist. It's just incredible to me that the largest legacy media outlet in the region still publishes the rantings of a crank without credentials, experience, or technical legitimacy. He's got a blog, he lies, and seems to live to attack SkyTrain technology on principle. That's it.

If it's "fairness" they want, shouldn't they get an op-ed from Daryl?

I'm not worried though - the internet's learned to tune him out, and most of Vancouver wants SkyTrain. Zwei's only audience at this point is Point Grey residents, Surrey First mouthpieces and the eight remaining Condonlanders.

looks to be too sunny to be recent real pics. funny how the power and trolly wires disappear in front of the building

I thought the proposed broadway stn entrance is now a planned emergency exit (when the stn is completed next decade)

A couple of those renders are quite old. Most notably the render that is looking South/West and shows a 15-20 foot rough grey cinderblock wall that was part of the old 711. The new building abuts the beige painted concrete 80's 2 storey Commercial building. The render looking South/East actually includes part of the windows of the 711 as well, rendering fail.

Why would Aritzia open a store on Oak St. of all places. I can't see that being profitable as there's no other clothing retail in the area. I'm also pretty sure the train entrance has been eliminated completely from 988. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=193222&page=5

Yeah, just saw these renders were posted back in 2011.

Their leasing site says:

Quote:
Direct connection to future rapid transit with SkyTrain station in base of building

https://bosacommercial.com/building.php?building=988-west-broadway#tab_fs-info

And now Dalina being in that corner (owned by Bosa) with only 900 square feet makes sense if they have to leave in 5 years.

Here's the post referencing the stories that said the entrance has moved.
Could be that plans reversed again after the story (?)

I'm not sure why they would ever consider a clothing retailer in that spot, unless those are old renders and the ground floor has been re-divided. Johnny Rockets is in there now, and it's not a big spot.

Regarding the station entrance, that is a ways from the hospital, but no reason there couldn't be multiple entrance points to "Oak St." Station. Underground connections to VGH would be the best IMO, it's up a hill from there anyway.

Those are old renders, and the retail signs were misleading. It doesn't seem credible that either Aritzia or H&M were ever serious suggestions - the renderer presumably just stuck a couple of placeholder logos on the units. There's no suggestion that there's now any intention of putting a station entrance on the corner; until we see the final Broadway station plans we won't know for certain, but the earlier conversation was probably correct. It'll be across the street where Scotiabank used to be located. The building, as completed, doesn't exactly match those renders. As built, there's an overhang on the rooftop floor, for example.

With respect to the final station design and station house location(s), it would be nice if there were an ability to have a station house at 10th and Oak, either as redevelopment of the small apartment building on the northeast corner or on VGH property on the southeast corner. However that's likely not a priority since it would require digging up a block of Oak Street at the cost of millions of dollars and that's in addition to the above and below-ground station work and potential land acquisition cost, all to save a minute or so of walking time. Not likely.

So long as there's an actual entrance at Oak. Not everybody getting off wants to go to VGH.

i can only think of main st after rehab has 2 entrances

are there any other skytrain stations with more than one street entrance? they are quite rare

i too doubt it, mostly because VGH is still a block away from an oak st. @ 10th entrance. easier to put it on broadway @ laurel which is only a short block away from the staff entrance and the ER if your a walk-in

um, they have already chosen where the stations are. it is @ Oak St. so there will 100% be an entrance at Oak St. there will be station house at the old bank site. the CoV owns that site and bought it around 2014ish i believe. so there will 100% be a station house there.

don't bet on there being 2 entrances. that is a big no-no in Vancouver. it would be nice to have another entrance @ Laural but it is 180m from Oak to Laural. the only way i could see that doable is if they put the station mid-block and @ 100m platform doing 1 entrance on both sides.

but i don't bet on that happening. on the other hand, though, the City does own that rundown building @ 916 W Broadway; 1 property east of Laural. i wonder what it is classified under and when they bought it. hmm.

on another note, i hear it'll be 2 bored tunnels like the Canada-Line and they have already started putting in the new trolley poles on W 12th Av for the bus rerouting.
