Oh, it's part of the George Brown campus...good. I thought it was a condo for a second. Hopefully that area will grow up to be fair by urban design ideals...but I don't have a great amount of hope.

From what I could see from my lift into work today along the Gardiner two boring rigs were on site. Is it possible they could start excavation while still making design tweaks? As long as the structures perimeter remains the same I suppose they could start digging.

Oh great...so there's still time for the DRP to neuter this one the way they did the Innovation Centre next door, eh? That's too bad, 'cause it's probably the best building on the waterfront as proposed right now.

It's coming together as a bit more of a hodge-podge than I had hoped. There are some great developments happening, like 3XN's Aqualuna and Aquabella, Moshe Safdie's Monde, and the aforementioned Arbor. On the other hand, there are also some real stinkers like Aqualina and Aquavista (aren't all the names so creative?). Regardless of how nice they might look though, none of them seem to have really been designed with a cohesive vision in mind, and subsequently don't relate particularly well to each other.

As far as the streetscaping and public realm go, that should be fairly good at least, if Queens Quay West is any indication.

^^ They just updated the seismic code a few years ago, I am sure it's probably one of the most earthquake resistant buildings in Canada at the moment.

If you've never worked on a building in BC you'd probably have never been exposed to seismic codes. I remember installing controls and even the requirements for mounting an equipment cabinet were stringent- here in Alberta you just anchor it to a wall. Can't do that in Vancouver.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of projecting boxes... it's been done to death, but that building is still a stunner

In northern Alberta we are having to add seismic restraints to buildings now. The new High Prairie Hospital has Post disaster level restraints.

Most projects I did in the arctic, Yukon and Baffin Island especially had seismic restraints designed into the mechanical systems.

I wonder it the seismic restraints being added in Northern Alberta are due to increased seismic activity that’s been attributed to O&G extraction?

I don’t think the job I did up in Pangnirtung had any seismic requirements. But that whole place is a giant rock so not sure if it’s required

The school in Pang had restraints. I also think I saw them on the heath centre.

Yes there is the concern in the NW region of the province that the O&G earthquakes are increasing. But we do have earthquakes here they are just so deep we don't actually feel them. I remember in the 80s there was a quake on the west coast and the old Melton Building (The Black one on 103st) swayed.
