I used to live in an Edmonton condo with balconies and hardly anyone ever used theirs except for grilling food or the occasional smoker. They are the condo equivalent of suburban front yards... everyone wants one even though they're kind of useless.

I've wondered if everyone wouldn't be better off if the condo developers just scrapped the balconies in favour of well-appointed common use rooftop areas.

As a person who lives in Winnipeg, personally I think every project here is fabulous

Downtown Winnipeg needs more development, though the process is starting

We had a common ammenity area with an outdoor terrace at our condo in Edmonton and no one ever used it! I was a little surprised by that. But we never used it either because frankly when we’re sittiing around talking or enjoying the sun I’d rather not be around other people

I don’t know if I’d equate balconies and front yards.. We’ve got a huge front yard and we never use it, I’d gladly give it up but for more space in our back yard

Well, the site at Eglinton and Leslie (Upper East Village) is going well into sales, of their luxury units which stay above $1.2M is price which is insane IMO. The site is shown below from two days ago, when I took a walk over. The remaining stores on this commercial plaza remain thankfully...they'll be missed when their gone, along with the others already gone...

When I had my condo in Calgary we used the balcony all the time. It wasn't huge but loved it out there. I hate heights and being coop up indoors. It's probably why I was miserable living in high rise apartments. A hibachi wouldn't last long very in a big complex in Toronto. Someone would inform management and they would shut you down. It happen to several buddies in both rental and owned condos. That said, my neighbour had a propane barbeque in my first place and would carry the propane up the 15 floors via the elevator.

I don't mind heights. My condo in Calgary was on the 6th floor of a 14 floor building though, so not too high up. The building also only had four suites per floor which was ideal. I couldn't fathom living in a large highrise with hundreds of suites in it. That does not appeal to me at all.
