The People's Freeway neighborhood extends from 500 S to 2100 S, and State Street to I-15, encompassing several Community Councils.

The beneficial thing about an Urban Renewal District/Project area is that the RDA can offer loans on projects, similar to what they have done in the Central 9th project area.

Got it. Is "People's Freeway" an official RDA term for that area? My friends opened a coffee shop across from the South High School Salt Lake Community College campus, it's been interesting to follow their experience as small business owners there.

Why is it called the people's freeway district. I have never heard that term before, until recently on this forum. They should change the name as part of the revival... "The People's Freeway District" sounds like some sort of Nazi Germany concentration district for poor people or somthign.

Pretty close. It is a maligned poorly planned area that needs serious, serious help.

More Chairman Mao, but yeah. When I first saw it used here I thought it was sarcasm.

Got this from the planning dept today. Looks like they are bisecting the TSA changes and widening the design parameter changes to multiple districts. August 24th is the public hearing. This is turning out to be one of the most important zoning changes in recent memory. I'll be there with bells on. Let me know if any of you want to attend and maybe we'll sneak across the street to Canellas for a Negroni or two after? The planning dept has been really diligent in hearing out different ideas on this and now is the time to make your voice heard:

Quote:
The Planning Division has published an update to the Transit Station Area, TSA Zoning Improvement proposal. The update includes an updated summary of the proposed changes, draft zoning ordinance text, and draft development guidelines. The update can be downloaded from the following link:

http://www.slcdocs.com/Planning/Planning%20Commission/2016/522.pdf

Some sections of the current design standards for TSA developments are being moved into a separate proposal. This separate proposal is a new chapter to the zoning ordinance that will consolidate design standards for multiple City zones into one section of the zoning code. The memo for those changes and the associated draft text can be downloaded here:

http://www.slcdocs.com/Planning/Planning%20Commission/2016/DCS.pdf

The Planning Commission will be holding a public hearing to obtain additional feedback regarding the proposed changes to the TSA zoning and the design standards chapter on Wednesday, August 24th. The Planning Commission meeting begins at 5:30 and is held in room 326 (3rd floor) of the City and County Building (451 S State St). The public hearing for the TSA proposal is the 4th item on the agenda. The design standards changes are the 3rd item on the agenda. The agenda can be viewed here: http://www.slcdocs.com/Planning/Planning%20Commission/2016/824aagn.pdf

Following that meeting, the Planning Division will evaluate the additional public comments with respect to the proposed changes and may make additional changes to the proposal. The Planning Division will then bring an updated proposal to the Planning Commission at a later date for an additional public hearing and a recommendation. Following a recommendation by the Planning Commission, the proposal will be sent to the City Council.

A previous Planning Commission memo that discusses the origin of the proposal can be found here: http://www.slcdocs.com/Planning/Planning%20Commission/2016/TSAM.pdf

An additional Planning Division report reviewing the state of the TSA zoning from an April Planning Commission meeting is available here: http://www.slcdocs.com/Planning/Planning%20Commission/2016/TSA.pdf

The moniker is real and official.

Maybe I'll go take some pictures. Right next to Witzell's pawn there is what appears to be a tweaker junkyard/cemetary? There is a sign made out of warped particle board. In red dripping spray paint it says that they will KILL thiefs.(I can't remember the exact wording but KILL in dripping red paint is there for sure) There is too much 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 and blight in that neighborhood, especially for an area that actually has a good deal of potential.

But, does anybody know WHY it is called the 'People's Freeway' neighborhood?

Were the people that lived there so enamored at the prospect of having I-15 built next to their neighborhood that they named it for them?

North Temple and 300 W: Project consists of a 2 story concrete podium with parking and residential units with 4 stories of wood framed residential use above. There will be 240 units.

No renderings yet but hopefully it is just as nice as the stuff going up right next to it on 400 W. I'm glad to see such rapid growth in that area.

I definitely thought it was just a joke/place holder name.

The Rio Grande neighborhood is going to be one of the cities most thriving neighborhoods in just a few years.

I don't love the street engagement of 360, but I do like the density.

Looks like the people behind the upcoming designs did North Sixth Apartments and the new 4th West Apartments. They also did Startup Crossing in Provo. In my opinion their designs are better than most, certainly better than anything that has been built recently in the area around the gateway. They're also designing the upcoming Orange Street Apartments and the apartments planned for 500 West and 400 North, west of the train tracks.

Where is this going? Are they going to tear down the north temple deli and motel? No way it's going where the triad center, or LDS parking lot is.... I doubt crown burger would ever sale its property. Also where is the rendering... I can't see anything.

No renderings yet. North Temple Inn is coming down for this. I think it would occupy the same footprint as the inn, for the most part. Looks like the deli is staying.

Well that's unfortunate. That motel has horrible street engagement. I would like to see it go right on the corner. I really dislike having small fast food building taking up full corners in the down town area. Crown burger, and Carl's Jr. are other examples of this.

I'm much less excited about this if it's just going to be the same footprint as the motel... however it is one less north temple motel. Only one more on the east side of the overpass to go... still a bunch on the west side though.

Yes technically there is still another "Motel" on N. Temple, east of I-80, so I'm guessing it's just the thought of old motels you don't like or is it actually each individual motel and the activities that go on there that you don't like? The reason I am clarifying is that I have never really looked at the motel on 300 W and N. Temple in the same category as the motels west of I-15, and I believe the other motel, between W. Temple and 200 W, is used for couple missionaries to stay in. So if it's just motels in general that you don't like I get it, but if it is the reputation and "use" of the motels then you are simply lumping all of them together based on location and design, as being a place were poor people live and hookers do their thing.

I for one would rather the last little motel stay as it is, rather than be torn down for more parking, which is what I would guess would be the interim use if it were to be torn down.

Well I'm sort of bummed because that was a pretty cool boutique conversion possibility that will no longer be.

Google Fiber is ON.

I'm sure many of you read the news today that Google Fiber is now available for signups in Central City and at apartment complexes across the city. For those of you not aware, it's ON.

Hey, Salt Lake City, Google Fiber is up and running
The Salt Lake Tribune

Some 18 months after it added Utah's capital to its favored U.S. cities, the Mountain View, Calif.-based technology company lit up a fiber-optic network in and around downtown and began seeking business and residential customers.

This first phase of Google Fiber's rollout of web access with speeds of up to one gigabit per second — with optional television and phone services — covers roughly 112 blocks from 100 South to 800 South between 400 West and 1300 East.
