I've been saying this stuff for years - and Calgary's midrise urban villages surrounding downtown (Kensington/Bridgeland/Mission/17th ave, Marda Loop areas as well as secondary nodes have been infilling at a pace that far exceeds anything going on in other prairie cities. Even Inglewood is starting to get its act together. These are also consistently some of busiest areas of the city on evenings/weekends and imo more enjoyable than anywhere in the core. The Main Streets initiative here should boost this movement more.

6,300 condo units u/c in Calgary's core (City Centre) isn't too bad either.

Yeah, that last MTL shot is superb! One of the best I've seen.

The great thing about that Montreal picture is you can see how great the streets would be to walk down. That London-esque mansion block at Sherbrooke and Guy, the high-rise curtain of McGill College, the old Square Mile houses tucked in behind the Chateau...

... you can just tell it's good all the way from sky to curb.

I'm homesick.

It's true that there are areas of Mtl that are very reminiscent of London's built form -- in fact, I've always thought that some of the very most British areas in this country/continent are actually located in la belle province.

(Again, just so it's clear, it's a compliment. I liked London, though it's been years since my last visit.)

Exactly. Seems incredibly obvious that someone (especially someone thousands of kms away from the Prairies) scrolling quickly through here could've mistaken one for the other.

The default assumption in here is that any city that looks exactly like any of the two cities in Tfreder's post is Calgary as it's the one generally always see here. The surprise to me upon further analysis was to discover that Edmonton, from that angle, looks SO MUCH like Calgary. The river with its wide green areas on each side, the concentrated CBD and its position relative to the river bend, the CBD quickly tapering off into SFHs, the flat surface of the entire city and faraway horizon, the extending suburbs, the square grid for roads, etc.

Really uncanny. No one can look at Tfreder's post and say with a straight face they don't look totally alike unless you stop and look at the scale of the buildings in the CBD. (Calgary does "beat" Edmonton there, no discussion.)

Yeah that block along with one on Milton near University always reminded me of colonial takes on a West End mansion.

The Old Port can look like like the City, too – especially on a grey day – but maybe Liverpool is an even closer approximation.

Montreal looks more Anglo-Scottish than it does French, despite whatever Parisian foo-foo talk they put in the tourist guides.

This one also really works on that "I'd totally walk down that street" level.

No one called Toronto out for them, it was just pointed out that they're there. No one sees it as a problem except maybe you and a few others. You're just being silly.

And yes, Montreal has SFHs very close to the downtown or even technically in its downtown (if you count parts of Westmount as part of downtown).

Big deal.

I'm actually back from a trip in London and Paris and it is striking to me how familiar London's built form feels to me, while Paris seems much more different. In London you have lots of streets with 3/4 storey brick appartement buildings, like in Montreal. Also, the constant clash between pre-war and more modern buildings... A Montrealer feels more "at home" in London than in Paris, despite the french connection.

Architecturally, anyway!
