They're just different now, which is kind of cool. Calgary's is exceptionally colourful and Po-Mo, with weird shapes and textures. Buildings that immediately come to mind are the Bow, Banker's Hall, the Calgary Tower, the Saddledome, and those two towers that are supposed to resemble mountains (EAP?).
Edmonton's still seems solidly grounded in the 1960s, with a lot of right angles and stoic ornamentation, and a higher proportion of older buildings overall. Buildings that come to mind are the CN Tower, Manulife (?) Place, the TD Bank, those reddish federal government buildings, the Telus Tower, the Macdonald Hotel, and maybe the Butterdome (I realize it's not downtown, but it's immediately recognizable in wider aerials). It's not as distinctive, but does a good job of looking "Classic Post-War North American" (maybe even the best?), while Calgary's is a bit more out-there. (Just in general, of course)
I also got the impression that part of Edmonton's downtown is on a slope, while Calgary's is all flat. This also makes the skylines a bit "different" (although the effect is muted from above)
