The Great Canadian Skyline Thread!

As the previous thread just reached the now ceremonial marker of 10 000 posts, I though I'd start out the newest iteration of the skyline thread with a collection of skyline shots from my trip to Ontario this past week. I didn't put a number on this thread (The Great Canadian Skyline Thread! III) because the numbers are pretty much inconsequential at this point.

Here is a link to the previous version of the skyline thread: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=197949

Lots of aerial pictures lately. Is it the drone age?

Pics are from Malek, member and owner of the Mtlurb forums

They're not great, but I honestly think a few of the towers are turning out a lot nicer than I expected. Namely Barrel Yards, Sage, and Luxe II.

I agree about Barrel Yards. I play baseball at Waterloo Park a couple times a week and have enjoyed watching them go up. Amazing location from a resident's standpoint as well.

The main problem is the buildings are so lifeless at ground level. Parking garages in the back and an empty lobby facing the street. The area almost seemed more lively when it was primarily detached houses.

Waterloo Park is a gorgeous place. The board-walk around the pond is my favourite. They couldn't have picked a better location for the Perimeter Institute or the Barrel Yards project.

I agree, pretty much everything going up in Waterloo right now is lifeless at street level, unfortunately. Hopefully they take a page out of Kitchener's book once City Centre and One Victoria are complete, as they will be quite active at street level. Though, those projects are right in the thick of downtown Kitchener, while most Waterloo projects are on the periphery of the core/inner city.

I've never found that city sexy at all.

Still not a bad skyline for the 7th biggest city in the province.

Some nice new Winnipeg aerials from Dan Harper Photography. The Red looks exceptionally muddy in that glowing summer light...

The old Peg is looking good and those are some of the best shots of Montreal I have ever seen!

I agree. Great Montreal and Winnipeg shots.

Phenomenal Winnipeg panos. I mean, wow.

harls Aug 6, 2014 4:34 PM

The Van shot with the fireworks.. amazing.

The baseball stadium in Winnipeg is awesome. When you're there, you've got the backdrop of downtown behind you. Very cool.

MB Hydro looks so much girthier (not a word) than the three usual suspects at P&M.

Chadillaccc Aug 6, 2014 4:35 PM

Yeah for sure! It's definitely the best baseball stadium west of the Skydome.

It is a massive building (more floorspace than the significantly taller P&M towers), but the vaguely triangular shape hides its footprint somewhat - when you see it from Portage Avenue you can't really appreciate the fact that the tower and podium sit on almost an entire (admittedly smaller than usual) city block.

This was probably one of the most common criticisms of the Hydro tower on the Man/Sask forum when it was first built... it looks sleek from Portage but it's kind of stumpy when you see it from the wide side.
