I don't work with it anymore (I used to, I know it's changed since I've worked with it).

But you had to bring in passenger numbers on top of it, but eliminate transfer passengers. We were actually allowed to have a pretty big allowance in terms of margin of error. Even now there are certain programs you can apply for to get certain breaks ... At least up until 2010, but it's government nothing's simple.

I can't comment if today's it's easier to calculate or not.

The press release is days before the Martin government's first budget as a minority government.

The original Bill C-43 (budget implementation act) was amended at the request of the NDP. NDP amendments were Bill C-48. The NDP amendments were to increase corporate taxes and funnel the money into spending initiatives. Its possible the airport rent decrease went out the window with NDP amendments.

My recollection is similar to Zmonkey's, the rent calculation while harmonized in some areas, was different between airports in others.

So is it pretty much a given that AC44 loves using the new runway even in the early morning when it arrives?

I was on todays flight and sure enough that's where we landed, I did note that no reverse thrust was used. Flight arrived early at 0635.

On another aviation related note, I know it could be tricky with our cost structures up in Canada but I would LOVE for Hawaiian to start flying here. Took them from LAX to Maui and it was a treat. Incredibly friendly crew, lots of updates from the flight deck (informing us of all they were doing to minimize turbulence), nice seat back entertainment systems (although unlike AC you do have to pay for movies and tv shows, there was Hawaiian stuff free though), and the best part? A COMPLIMENTARY MEAL IN ECONOMY. Blew me away.

I happened to disembark the same time as the pilots and told them they should start flying to Canada, the FO was game. He said it would be great.

At 6:35 AM Rwy 35R is the preferred arrival runway, so every plane between 6 and 7 uses the runway.

As far as needing the big runway, ACA009 to RJAA requires it about half the time, and CPA needs it quite often when going to VHHH. I can see these flights using it every time in the summer when it's warmer. Luckily with the way we sort the departures, all Europe and eastern seaboard will use the east runway normally so there isn't a requirement issue.

Hawaiian cost structures and west coast USA opportunities make it impossible for them to compete with AC and WS. Example YVR-OGG vs SEA-OGG for may 2-10. AC and WS are $567 USD while HA is $635,fares are all in basis and YVR departures have extra $70 in US taxes.

I would like it if HA came to canada as well, but their business model does not work for canada Hawaii market. Their business model is more in line with Hawaii to Japan run.

I knew it would be purely fantasy, just such a nice experience and cool way to fly to the islands, giving you a taste of Aloha before you even arrive.

Couple more shots of the holdrooms. Pictures don't do it justice, especially the wood ceilings, it looks much better in person!

Flooring install is progressing well on Transborder level - makes it look a lot nicer and more refined. It's starting to get that true International Airport feel (think Hong Kong, Heathrow etc.) I thought I would miss the carpet but I don't, the granite is 🞵🞵🞵🞵.

RIP YYC carpet tile!

Ya it is probably too big, for right now. Hopefully 10-20 years from now we can thank the airport for building it this way right off the start.

The central processor (checkin, security, CBSA, USCBP, retail, food courtt, bag claim) will stay the same, but the end of the transborder pier can take another 20 gate concourse in the hammerhead.

The central processor functions are the ones where demand exceeds capacity,so make it as big as possible.

I know some people at Hawaiian and they say their perception is the market is probably already over-served, there just isn't that much new demand to unlock and they perceive WestJet to be an irrational competitor that they just aren't that interested in engaging.

Allegiant demonstrated there just isn't much of a price sensitive market from the mainland to Hawaii. People in Eastern Canada will go to the Caribbean regardless and the Western Canadians who can afford it and are so inclined are already going.

Looks like AC's "new" A320 have arrived just in time for fin 214 to be written off at YHZ. Not sure if AC was adding new lift with those frames are old A320 were being returned to lessors?

Airlineroute's twitter put this out an hour ago:

"WestJet to operate Boeing 767 on Calgary - Toronto route from 02AUG15, once a day (5 weekly from 04SEP15)"

I do believe these flights will be used for crew training and ETOPS certification of the birds.

Edit: And I do believe there was some talk about aircraft utilization during the winter season AB-Hawaii runs, perhaps this follow-up tweet answers that:

"WestJet's Boeing 767 will continue to operate Calgary - Toronto route during winter season from 25OCT15 to 29MAR16, 4 times a week"

It's a WS news kind of day, this article from The Runway Girl Network reveals their seating on the 767's and more info on the incoming wifi system (you're going to have to pay for most of it):

The CAA is updating City Council this morning, they mention the new terminal has been pushed back to Fall 2016. Not sure if this is construction complete or opening time frame.

Edit: Atkinson has given no reason for the delay, but did mention the testing period before opening the terminal.

They are also looking at separating parking between domestic and transborder/international.

By "separating parking" this is in reference to overhead signage at the entrance to the parkades.

Signage will direct International/USA passengers to park in P2 and Domestic in P1. Of course, you can park wherever you want but hopefully this reduces the number of people who park at the north end of P1 and then send angry tweets to @flyyc "Parking soooo far to new International Terminal Building" , "Next time I am going to fly from YEG" etc. etc.

Also, not talked about much but a new underground tunnel is being built to connect a new elevator tower serving P2 (and future P3) directly to IFP. ie. you won't have to go "outside" or cross any active roadways.

There are actually a lot of parking related developments currently underway or planned, including Park-n-Jet moving south of Airport Trail and a couple new surface lots after construction wraps up on the East Terminal (IFP).

I'm looking forward to WS creating a true Premium Economy - there's a market for it, especially on the widebodies but even on the 737's - if done right and priced right.

Don't care for inflight wifi, the first thing I do when going on vacation is turn off my phone - spend enough time being glued to a screen(s) the other 49 weeks of the year.

I remember the first time I went into the existing terminal just after it was built, and my dad say the same thing....'way too big'. It might be to start with, but it will no doubt get busier as time goes on.
