that truly troubling side of dt is one reason why I place everything in a different context than other ppl....like the urbanists who are fascinated by theory more than reality. So I find it difficult to be quite as up in arms about issues the way they are. That includes the question of parking podiums or amt of parking spaces in new projs. I can't get all unhappy over or bothered by such an issue the way others do, at least if it's not a matter of parking upping the cost of an apt or condo.
Proposed bldgs like the one at 4th & hill to me are more a matter of whether they'll actually get funding & really break ground before everyone is old & gray. Other issues take a backseat to that question, if only cuz too many proposals thru the yrs have taken forever to get started....much less completed....or been put on hold, or outright cancelled.
Even the question of architectural design doesn't seem quite so earth shattering to me when there are still not just the problems you raise, but also so much land throughout dtla that remains in desperate need of fixing & cleaning up. All those areas have been so numerous....& still are too common....that I feel like a calculator is needed to add them all up.
one of the properties in dt that is kind of caught between 2 worlds, where although it's not in pristine shape, it in other ways still is a viable bldg. The old herald examiner bldg appears to be useful as a sound stage....& now with new devlpt rising near it, it's increasingly in the thick of things, less cut off from dt or the more centralized portions of south pk as it once was....
