What's made it get worse in the last two years?

I can certainly confirm that it has gotten worse the last 2 years. I don't know what from though.

that truly troubling side of dt is one reason why I place everything in a different context than other ppl....like the urbanists who are fascinated by theory more than reality. So I find it difficult to be quite as up in arms about issues the way they are. That includes the question of parking podiums or amt of parking spaces in new projs. I can't get all unhappy over or bothered by such an issue the way others do, at least if it's not a matter of parking upping the cost of an apt or condo.

Proposed bldgs like the one at 4th & hill to me are more a matter of whether they'll actually get funding & really break ground before everyone is old & gray. Other issues take a backseat to that question, if only cuz too many proposals thru the yrs have taken forever to get started....much less completed....or been put on hold, or outright cancelled.

Even the question of architectural design doesn't seem quite so earth shattering to me when there are still not just the problems you raise, but also so much land throughout dtla that remains in desperate need of fixing & cleaning up. All those areas have been so numerous....& still are too common....that I feel like a calculator is needed to add them all up.

one of the properties in dt that is kind of caught between 2 worlds, where although it's not in pristine shape, it in other ways still is a viable bldg. The old herald examiner bldg appears to be useful as a sound stage....& now with new devlpt rising near it, it's increasingly in the thick of things, less cut off from dt or the more centralized portions of south pk as it once was....

That means the 1st street station is a foregone conclusion... it's just a matter of time... do they construct the turn around platforms at 1st street in the next year or so and start revenue service, or they wait until closer to 2023 when the first phase of Purple line extension is supposed to open.

The 6th street station is not required to accommodate the projected frequency on Purple line but it is likely to be so low-cost that it will be done together with the 1st street station.
As Picaird said - "Make it so."

The May Co building already looks better without those ratty looking awnings and hodge-podge of low-end signage. It seems that they are trying to clean-up the building at least a bit, for those prospective tenant tours.

I don't think money is a problem. The owner (the Needleman's) own all of the ANJAC buildings DTLA as well as the Orpheum theater and Orpheum Lofts. In an article I read about the Singer Sewing building dated April 2014, Steve Needleman indicated that they expect to finish construction in 2016.

I don't know, probably a mix of factors like the economy and maybe a reduction of spending on treatment and services in other parts of the state and country. Increased meth use? Plus LA will always be a draw because of the weather and the concentration of services. It's been visibly worse since maybe late 2013/early 2014, and from talking to some of the regular homeless I see (that aren't meth heads) they say they don't want to sleep in skid row because it's too dangerous.

AEG attacks proposed Carson stadium

2012 MLS Cup - Houston Dynamo v Los Angeles Galaxy Getty Images

AEG apparently has deployed the “if we can’t build a football stadium in L.A., no one will” playbook.

Despite AEG’s abandonment of plans to build an NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles, AEG has now taken the offensive against both of the primary proposals that currently are racing to be approved and adopted. Previously, AEG commissioned former Director of Homeland Security Tom Ridge to dub a potential Inglewood stadium (where the Rams would play) a “terrorism event ‘twofer,'” due to the possibility that a plane otherwise landing at LAX could be steered into the venue.

Now, AEG has urged the mayor of Carson to reconsider plans to build a football stadium (where the Chargers and Raiders would play) in the vicinity of the AEG-owned StubHub Center (pictured), which hosts the MLS L.A. Galaxy, along with soccer, cycling, boxing, tennis, concerts, and other events.

I fear this may be the demise of the NFL returning to LA. Litigation at the highest level. Angelenos will be left disappointed once again. AEG really hurting their reputation with these memos/studies. For all they have done to revitalize DTLA (and profit handsomely), they will be vilified for blocking the NFL's return in court. Just focus on the convention center!!

Its happening in other cities as well.......meth seems to be getting a stranglehold again. There have been similar complaints in SF, Portland and Seattle. I just thought that DTLA had escaped a worsening problem.

Not good news. On the brighter side, I see you like the Onni corner as much as I do.

I don't get what they are doing. Are they just blocking for the sake of blocking [bad sports], or do they intend eventually to build a stadium DT?

Here's a small Arts District update from yesterday afternoon.

The Garey Building (formerly Megatoys) should be topping out soon.

I thought I would post this since I hadn't seen it yet, but it looks like ground floor of One Santa Fe in that long stretch between 3rd and 1st Sts will mostly be used for offices with some street-facing entrances. It's still mostly a pedestrian dead zone, but it looks decently good.

It also looks like One Santa Fe's first retail spot, Cafe Gratitude, will be opening any day now. The restaurant is fully furnished and it looked like they are training staff.

On another note, the Arts District has now gotten busy enough that the district's streets are woefully in need of reconstruction. There's simply too much traffic now (pedestrian, auto, and bike) to keep putting up with so many blocks without curb cuts or marked crosswalks, and a general lack of traffic calming.

May Co. is going to be the make or break for Broadway. Whatever happens there will give an immediate impact. I was saying earlier that it can't get worse than what was already there. I highly doubt the new owners will be leasing any of the retail spots for something the mom and pop shops can afford. I'm just curious if it'll be one giant department store(Bloomingdales) or a collection of mid range retailers that could finally kickstart the retail Renaissance on Broadway.

Oh and alongside Fig Central breaking ground, Glass Tower broke ground as well.

Yeah, the AD definitely needs a pedestrian overhaul, pretty much everywhere above 6th. They should be getting the developers to contribute to things like crosswalks and such.

My assumption..... AEG said that they weren't building a downtown stadium anymore....but they didn't necessarily rule out building a stadium somewhere else.... My guess is they are blocking the other 2 proposals, stalling so that they make a deal somewhere to build there's.

My happily ever after moment.....If the city rezones a lot of the warehouses that currently line the LA river in the south/east corner of downtown, where the 10 meets the river, Build a stadium over there. Will spur development against the river and we will have developers racing to build against a hopefully revamped river/park...

Warehouses downtown aren't needed anymore, especially with industrial facilities/warehouses spread out all over the county and enough vacancies to pick up the exodus of industrial zones of downtown. Whats the point of revitalizing the river if its going to be lined with rail and warehouses. The rail can easily be capped/ covered with developments/ parks.

Sorry. I sometimes forget this isn't sim city still possible though with the right leaders and investors..... Maybe??

Sounds great except industrial vacancy in central LA is less than 3%
