haha - I also nerded out earlier and read the architectural copper page on wikipeida and was going to post it. It is one of those issues that just leads to more questions the more you look into it.

I also read on some installer forums that there may be galvanic properties at play - if the copper on the roof is in direct contact with any other metals of a lower galvanic number (zinc, aluminum, iron etc) the other metal will corrode first and the copper will stay black. One installer said even something as small as a galvanized (zinc) nail would do it. There are also variants in material other than 99.9% copper. Some copper is actually copper alloy with zinc and lead in small amounts and if so they will corrode to dark brown and not turn black. Most sources said the black to green transition takes many years, 10 to 30 yrs and if we are a low pollutant area and relatively lower humidity we are likely on the long end of that scale.
But you can see the roof starting to turn green on the horizontal parts in the pic you posted earlier. And I talked to others that also vaguely remember that the roof used to be green years ago.

I was in the Cornball the other day and noticed that Town Shoes has opened in the spot Sketchers used to be. That is good news as there is a poor choice of shoes shopping in this city especially for men. I usually hit town shoes when I am in Vancouver so good to see we have one here now. Anyone know what happened to Sketchers, did it shut down or relocate?

That's great news, it really is hard to find good places to buy men's shoes in Regina.

Does anyone know when the bridge over Pilot Butte creek on Victoria Avenue East is going to be repaired or replaced?

I thought it would have been fixed this summer, but never saw any work being done on it. Any chance of it getting shut down again or is there just a permanent detour in place?

All I could think of when I read the post on town shoes is the Shoe Event Horizon.

I do agree that another option for shoes isn't necessarily bad. Although I am pretty uncaring about my footwear. As long as it fits right and keeps the elements out I'm pretty good.

I'm not certain but I think they lifted that restriction. There used to be big signs right on ring road notifying them of the detour, those are long gone. I think the replacement of the bridge has been pushed to the back burner as the perimeter highway leads to less traffic on this bridge. The talk was they were going to redo and have it 6 lanes all the way from Circle to out of town on Victoria, I'm guessing that is out the window too with a huge reduction in traffic coming once the new highway is operational.

The City is replacing these bridges this winter with culverts (4 lanes initially, expandable to 6).

The City initially declared the birdges unsafe & imposed weight restrictions. The province subsequently inspected the bridges, and based on more extensive experience with similar timber structures, signed-off on re-opening them (in reality, the City likely declared them unsafe to apply political pressure to the province to ante up funding).

The Old City Hall has been the same basic colour since the mid-'70s. (I actually remember that, for my dad's old office in the late Medical and Dental Building faced the dome.)

What hotels would you guys recommend in Regina? I'm looking for a fairly cheap price, like $110 or less as it's for 3 nights... but I'm trying to convince my hubby to maybe stay at the Double Tree downtown for one of the nights. Is that the new one that they just fully redid?

My theory is that there is much more air pollution at that corner than in Wascana Park. Air pollution, especially nitrogen dioxide from tail pipes, prior to emission controls, is a main catalyst for oxidation to the green patina.

I just did a quick search on Travelocity (I was thinking $110 might be pretty difficult), and the Wingate on the corner of Broad and Sask drive came in around $120. It's right across from the casino at the edge of downtown. You could always go for a drink or something in the double tree lounge if you wanted to check it out or something?

But in general, hotels are pretty pricey in Regina (relatively speaking of course). The occupancy rate is pretty high generally, so they can get away with keeping prices high.

you can usually get better deals on priceline or hotwire - but you don't know the hotel until you buy - but you can get some sweet deals.

Cool, thanks guys. We will probably end up staying at a hotel outside of the core it looks like, but I have no problem taking the bus to downtown. My partner and our friends have a curling bonspiel they're competing in, that's why we're going to Regina. I'm basically just going along for the ride, as I've never been to Regina and really want to see the city.

If anyone wants to meet up for a beer and a photo walk on Friday evening or Saturday/Sunday any time, hit me up!
