Anyone know what's going on beside the Russian Cafe on 16 block Albert? I believe it's the old Scouts camp store. It was for lease for awhile, now the sign is gone and there's been construction going on in there the last week or so. I also noticed the lot on Albert and 5th (I think? The old Quinn the Eskimo location) is fenced off and there's work going on there.

It will go black before green. The oxidization of the copper will darken it to black. At a later stage the corrosion products of copper turn green due to the formation of copper sulfate, carbonate and chloride salts in varying concentrations.

a sample weathering chart from copper.org. I don't think the timelines are right for Sask conditions. I vaguely remember it was the.......? mid 90's when the leg roof was last repaired and had a bright copper exterior. It has been black mostly since then which was ? 20 yrs ago? According to the weathering chart it should have started to turn green by now.

I don't think this applies to the Leg dome. It is 100 years old and still is not green. I believe it is treated with something to make it turn black instead of green. I cannot find any source for this info, but I am quite sure it has never been green.

I think it has something to do with the dry Saskatchewan climate. It's the same reason why the roof on the Bessborough in Saskatoon turns to black, not green. I don't have a source for this, but read it somewhere I'm sure...

That'd be interesting. Didn't even think of the Bez, but good point there... Probably the same thing.

There is an old apartment complex (The Mayfair I think), that has a roof that's turned green though.

Regarding the ledge dome though, I do remember seeing some green striping below some of the vents as it has aged.

I also have vague recollections of the leg dome being green......pre 90s maybe. But I'm not positive.

Well this old postcard is interesting, but remember these were all hand tinted so the artist in Chicago or New York probably just assumed it was green. I was just looking at the penthouse roof of the Hotel Sask. It is also black but you can see some green showing through in a few areas.

Trawling through photos on the Internet, I can find some that have tinges of green. It appears that we either keep painting it black and not letting it go through its natural aging or it is treated to keep the green down longer. Or a bit of both.

What about the old city hall/post office building, the copper there has turned green so I don't think it is climate related..

I was also going to do a pic search but wondered about the accuracy of the "re touched" photos. Its almost like no one took pictures before the internet. From what I have read, the green is highly desireable not just from an aesthetic point of view but also function as the verdigris patina serves as a natural protective barrier that protects the copper underneath - not unlike the coat of oxidation on corton steel.

Maybe the last time they redid the roof they cheaped out and put on tin or something other than copper.

Perhaps slight climactic differences between Saskatoon and Regina allow slight greening in Regina as shown on the Leg and Prince Edward buildings? I have no idea.

Utah and South Dakota's are black as well. Must be the low humidity.

If I remember correctly the roof on the Hotel Vancouver is green, so maybe it does have something to do with the humidity.

Sorry to beat this to death but it seems that in environments with low humidity and low air pollution, the green patina will never form and the roof will stay black:

I was always under the impression that the acid in the rain turned copper green. Which is why so many copper buildings in eastern Canada are green. Our rain has very little acid and is often 'basic' in nature (hence alkali lakes) and therefore does not turn the copper green. Maybe with Evraz in close proximity we have a bit of acid rain which, over the years has turned the roof slightly green.

I actually thought I even recalled former Premier Grant Devine talking about this back in the day.
