Coun. Ed Gibbons, city council's regional mastermind, wants Edmonton to push ahead with three regional annexations at once.
In the group photograph of Edmonton's new city council taken before Tuesday's official swearing-in ceremony, Coun. Ed Gibbons stood at the right hand of new Mayor Don Iveson. Gibbons' position was appropriate, not just because of his tenure on council.
During the election campaign, Iveson said his top priority if elected would be to get a fairer deal for Edmonton in the region, and thus build a stronger capital region. On this particular issue, the lowprofile Gibbons, 64, will help lead the charge.
Indeed, Gibbons is Edmonton's secret weapon. He's a quiet and largely unknown politician, but a major player on enough key regional and industrial committees that he's in a unique position to develop and push ahead an ambitious vision...
