I see it working well for Red Deer, if AC keeps the prices about the same as flying out of YYC or YEG. Having lived in Colorado Springs which was 50-60 minutes south of DEN we flew from there all the time when the prices were comparable. Even though the flight was only 15 minutes on a CRJ.

Pulling in nearly 7 million passengers a year without a Hub airline is pretty impressive...

Winter schedules are starting to show in the early stages with a few airlines for YEG.

Looks like Sunwing is adding Ixtapa with a Thursday flight in December and bumps up CUN flying to 5-6 flights per week up from 4 last winter.

Transat looks to be scaling back CUN in frequency to two flights per week but operated by larger 332 equiptment for the season as opposed to the 310 as they are beginning to phase the type out of the fleet.

Again very early to see what the winter will produce and what schedules will be tweeked.

We need more flights to business destinations, especially more flights to the US in late afternoon/early evening. I would love for the IAH red-eye to return.

Also a flight to YYZ at like 7 PM would be helpful. Getting to the airport after work is a real hassle with so much traffic. A late arrival in Tor sure beats the red-eye.

^I don't disagree about more flights and better times, but I rarely find getting to the airport in rush hour challenging and I am downtown. Unless there is something extraordinary, I can drive there at 5pm and be there by 6pm.

Obviously most of us here travel for work. Just nice to have some place to escape, and the more options the better.

Like you said late afternoon evening flights are needed. EIA would need to fight hard for those, because those would milk traffic away from YYC.

You are right that not everyone does. But winter leisure traffic is important and is why YEG see's international numbers spike during the winter months.

It looks like Edmonton will have the same number of weekly departures this winter as they had last winter, but the mix of aircraft and whatnot is a bit different; for example, the Varadero flight is now shared with Winnipeg but is now on a larger aeroplane. The second Puerto Vallarta flight is gone, but a new destination, Manzanillo, has now appeared. Transat's upcoming schedule has always been difficult to figure out in advance, and may change several times before the season starts.

Westjet has the same schedule in the system as last year. Since Sunquest has withdrawn from the at-risk business I presume Westjet Vacations has picked up the full risk this year.

Sunwing is where the expansion is. They have now surpassed Transat as the major player in the Sun Vacations business from Edmonton. The Ixtapa flight is new, as is a sixth weekly to Cancun during the fat part of the season. In addition, it seems the Cayo Coco flight is no longer shared with Calgary. Another interesting development is that Sunwing has been touting to travel agents a new destination in Grand Bahama, to which Edmonton has been named a departure city. Packages have not yet been loaded into the system, so this may be dependent on some government deal s going through.

Devotees of this thread may take interest in the fact that Sunwing has scheduled more departures from Edmonton than from either Calgary or Vancouver. Even Transat flies as many or more Sun flights from Edmonton as from those places. There are many reasons why airlines put flights here rather than there; the reasons are seldom the ones they state publicly.

How about the next phase of expansion be to renovate the existing North Terminal and actually use it.

I see Canadian North and Air North departures listed at Gates 16 and 18 but is that it? What other gates (or how many) with bridges exist in the north terminal? The terminal map EIA provides shows nothing of the north terminal departure area.

I also wish they would renumber the gates. It is quite ridiculous to have Gates 1-48 listed on the EIA map. Even if gates were measured by factors of two like in the South Terminal, we should have 24 entry points into aircraft.

Thanks for the information! Sunwing like it leave it has been doing very well. I'm assuming the Varedero flight with Transat still goes via YYC as well? That's what I liked about Sunwing...truly non-stop flights (even though you might be delayed 12 hours due to how they are operated).

Seems to coincide with the fact Sunwing is increasing its wet leases on 738's this winter as they seem to be looking to get more market share as Transat scales back across Canada this winter...

Early Sunwing schedules seem to indicate the following for YEG.

Mexico.

-Cancun 5x week (6 during peak season, up from 4 last season)
-Los Cabos 2x week.
-Huatulco 1x week.
-Mazatlan 1x week.
-Puerto Vallarta 1x week.
-Ixtapa 1x week (New for 2013/14).

Jamaica.

-Montego Bay 1x week.

Cuba.

Varadero 2x week (3 during peak season).
Cayo Coco 1x week (now nonstop was via YYC last season)
Cayo Santa Maria 1x week.

In addition as mentioned by Mode, Grand Bahama Island (Freeport?) is being touted as a Edmonton Destination to Travel Agents. I would assume a Weekly flight when its official.

Transat so far is indicating the following. (as per Transat holidays, Nolitours, and Air Transat websites).

-Cancun 2x week (operated by larger A332 for longer period).
