Reposted to this page. Hopefully a new conversation will arise from this!

BTW, when is the official render for the Regina stadium to be released? It should be pretty amazing, considering it has the largest budget of any new football stadium in Canada thus far ($280 million)

I believe you won't be seeing any until the winning consortium has been picked - as happened in Hamilton

http://ckom.com/story/city-regina-short-lists-stadium-bids/108405

Important to note

Quote:
The winner will create their own design, taking some cues from the concept design that made a splash last fall. Sjoberg says the final design could run the gamut, with the winning firm either choosing to use the concept design as-is, use none of it, or anything in between. He says the city will be able to dictate some elements that will be required.

Later this year, these are the 3 bids for the project, some of the most reputable stadium designers in the world.

1. Design: Bouygues (partnered with Graham Construction)

http://www.bouygues-construction.com/133i/specialization/building.html

2. Design: Turner (partnered with Clark Builders)

http://www.turnerconstruction.com/experience/sports

3. Design: HKS Inc (partnered with PCL)

Turner construction is apparently the favorite of the three who are bidding for the contract. They are affiliated with PCL, and are responsible for Yankee Stadium, Soldier Field, US Bank Tower (tallest building on the West Coast), the Burj Khalifa (tallest building on Earth), Taipei 101, and many many other incredible structures.

Actually HKS Architects are partnered with PCL. They designed the new Vikings stadium as well as Cowboys Stadium & Lucas Oil Field. Rumour around town is that this partnership is the early favourite, PCL does alot of govt work in Sask.

Ohhhh okay. I mixed it up then. But in that case, wow! that is some excellent talent they have brought to the table. Either way it goes, I'm sure any of the three will do incredibly well

Maybe it is the new Hamilton stadium and they're just keeping it all hush hush. They'll paint the navy bits black and presto. Tiger Town!

While I appreciate your 'finger flinging' comment - very funny - and your steadfast support for this stadium, you don't understand the vitriol Hamiltonians feel about this project because, well, you're not a Hamiltonian, you're detached from it all.

Many of us had our hearts set on a beautiful new waterfront stadium. Sure, there were flaws to that idea but the thought of being able to showcase our city from the beautiful West Harbour and not the industrial East End was intoxicating. Incidentally, Hamilton was to host all Pan-Am athletics events and most of the football matches (not to mention build a velodrome next to the proposed stadium - over the months, Hamilton's role in the games has be whittled down to just football). Anyway, those waterfront plans were derailed by the Kitty Cats - for no good reason - and a feckless City Council after which months and months of nonsense ensued, including threats by Bob Young that he'd move the team if he didn't get what he wanted. My life-long support for the TiCats really wavered during that time and remains tenuous, I have to say.

So, long story short, here we are back in the same 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 location as Ivor Wynne - overlooking our necrotic steel mills and all the other detritus of a once glorious industrial past - with a stadium which the City and the public had absolutely no say in in terms of design, etc. I understand that $119MM or $150MM or whatever the price tag really is isn't a lot of money, but I have the feeling that if we'd gone ahead with the waterfront location investors would have come out of the woodwork - there certainly seemed to be lots of interest at the time.

There's so much more to say but, God help me, I haven't got the strength. Here's a link to 200+ pages of pure sh*te about the stadium in the Hamilton section - http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=175400
Pete, thank you for your reasoned response.

Here's where I'm coming from. If you look back at my posts I was as disappointed as some others about what I saw initially. After the surprise of Winnipeg and Saskatchewan going for the gusto and not doing something on the cheap, I was disappointed. That disappointment was in the comparison of Hamilton vs the two others. But then I tried to look at it objectively and watched the video and thought this isn't too bad after all, especially for the minuscule budget.

Another thing that bothers me is we haven't seen anything that shows us what the exterior will actually look like close up. People are making assumptions and decisions without sufficient information and they are also living in the past. It's time to embrace it. Why would anyone want the facility to get off to such a terrible start. What good does that serve? It's not like they are going to change course and build a Sask like facility. The fans of TFC embraced BMO and the fans in Hamilton should do the same. You've voiced your displeasure now it's time to move on.

One last thing and I'm sure people will be glad I'm going to shut up, I am very close to one of the major players in this deal. Decisions and budgets were basically handed to them and their hands were tied. There was not a lot that could be done within the parameters that were present. I don't expect people here to understand that but seriously bitching now is just spitting in the wind.

I shall now retire, unless someone pisses me off

City of Ottawa

- The south stands continue to work its way up as more columns and walls are added to support the third floor
- A large section of the second floor was poured
- Two therapeutic tubs were delivered that will be used by the athletes in the south stands’ locker rooms
- The north stands will soon get a brand new roof
- Workers will install new end caps on the large roof beams over the north stands next week
- Inside the Civic Centre, an old fire retardant on the ceiling is being removed

By far the best looking stadium or arena built, proposed, or U/C on the continent. Just superb, well done Edmonton! Build it now.

Why do you keep repeating this false claim?

Numerous renders that give an excellent idea of what the stadium's exterior will fundamentally look like have been posted here.

You, yourself, posted these, for example:

Renders of a building's exterior don't get much more comprehensive than that. These renders tell us exactly what kind of structure this fundamentally is and provide us with more than adequate information on which to rationally base a judgment about the stadium's exterior architecture.

Your claims that no one has been able to articulate the stadium's shortcomings and that there is not enough information on which to make an informed judgment about the stadium's exterior design are both false. Stop repeating them.

Things make sense now. I'm afraid your intransigent defence of this worse-than-mediocre stadium is likely based more on personal reasons than on an objective assessment of the building's architectural merits.

The darned thing is actually starting to grow on me. If they'd extend the upper decks further into the corners and fill in one of the end zones to get it up to about 30,000 I'd probably become a fan of it.

Still won't come anywhere near Winnipeg's but...I guess the money just isn't there.

Ok, if you can tell so much from these drawings, what materials are being used on the exteriors? Designs, colours?

You, yourself gave three explanations of why you don't like the stadium, only one of which really applied to what we're talking about. It's been posted here several times that there are many and numerous issues with the design, I think I've seen two examples that were detailed (one was the infamous "chicken wire"). People just don't like being called out on their useless bitching.

And sorry, no, I'm not biased. There are a few posters here that have enough common sense to come to the realization that $119 million can only get you so much and not Cowboys' Stadium.

Worse than mediocre? Another non objective claim that will be accepted as fact.

If people here don't like it, that's fine. Just don't come on here and say there are all these problems and then hide when someone asks what they are. At least, Prometheus I'll give you credit for trying to articulate some of your issues, unlike most.

I also see there are posters, like me, who on sober second thought are seeing the stadium in a much different light. If the sightlines are anywhere as good as IW and the feeling as intimate, it will be a great place to watch a game.

What do you think of this, better? I'd be interested if you watched the video and if that would change your perception any.
