I never thought any such thing about Hamilton. All I'm seeing is a bunch of juvenile posts basically saying "it 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵" and no one is saying why. What do you call innovative design? Why are the renders horrid? Surely you must be able to say what the problem is apparently it is too much for me to ask people to explain themselves. Maybe they can't and it's just bitching for the sake of bitching, like referrals to the previous proposed sites

Oh my God, many of the obvious shortcomings of the Hamilton stadium have been pointed out numerous times in this thread already.

Here are just a couple:

The complete lack of aesthetic consideration given to its exterior: There is no cladding or any meaningful exterior expression. Its unsightly guts of metal girders and beams are left utterly naked and exposed. The structure makes no attempt to relate to its environment in an attractive way. At best, the stadium's exterior is uninspiring; at worst, it's an eyesore.

The absence of permanent endzone seating: The lack of an animated and noisy crowd enveloping the entire field of play detracts from the atmosphere, in the stadium and on television. Moreover, a stadium without any stands at the ends of the field is more closely associated with amateur sports than a growing professional football league. With the exception of Ottawa, every other CFL franchise either has or is building a stadium with seating in both endzones. By moving from a stadium which had seating in one endzone to a stadium which has seating in neither endzone, the Tiger Cats are taking a step backwards, not forward.

Here is another shortcoming:

Poor sightlines for most spectators: The stands are utterly straight. When the play is further down the field, one's view is easily obstructed by other spectators leaning out to see the action. The Romans discovered 2,000 years ago that this problem could be mitigated by creating curved stands.

and there, now you have three of the many reasons which have been stated several times by myself and others, literally spelled out for you now. Thanks Prometheus!

At least this is a start. How do you know what materials will be used for the exteriors? We haven't seen any detailed drawings. Are you basing this on a particular drawing? As for the exposed girders and beams they are supposed to be covered at eye level an example of which Frankie provided with the London Olympic stadium. Part of the building's aesthetic was to blend in with the neighborhood and not overshadow it.

The endzone seating is based entirely on the people of Hamilton. The budget for Infrastructure Ontario precluded it, the city of Hamilton or the Ti-Cats can add endzone seating if they so wish.

And Chadillaccc you've added nothing but "it 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵" posts. If there are many reasons as you say, how about adding some more. I've no problem with the haters but I'm going to ask them to get off their 🞵🞵🞵 and explain their opinion.

Re: Endzone seating - as part of the PSOS documents that each bid team received there was a criteria that 80% of the seating had to be within the goal-lines. The seats on each end run to the end of the endzones with gives the other 20% of seats

Re: Poor sightlines as I said before - the new stadium has better sightlines than the old IW

@elly63

While I appreciate your 'finger flinging' comment - very funny - and your steadfast support for this stadium, you don't understand the vitriol Hamiltonians feel about this project because, well, you're not a Hamiltonian, you're detached from it all.

Many of us had our hearts set on a beautiful new waterfront stadium. Sure, there were flaws to that idea but the thought of being able to showcase our city from the beautiful West Harbour and not the industrial East End was intoxicating. Incidentally, Hamilton was to host all Pan-Am athletics events and most of the football matches (not to mention build a velodrome next to the proposed stadium - over the months, Hamilton's role in the games has be whittled down to just football). Anyway, those waterfront plans were derailed by the Kitty Cats - for no good reason - and a feckless City Council after which months and months of nonsense ensued, including threats by Bob Young that he'd move the team if he didn't get what he wanted. My life-long support for the TiCats really wavered during that time and remains tenuous, I have to say.

So, long story short, here we are back in the same 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 location as Ivor Wynne - overlooking our necrotic steel mills and all the other detritus of a once glorious industrial past - with a stadium which the City and the public had absolutely no say in in terms of design, etc. I understand that $119MM or $150MM or whatever the price tag really is isn't a lot of money, but I have the feeling that if we'd gone ahead with the waterfront location investors would have come out of the woodwork - there certainly seemed to be lots of interest at the time.

There's so much more to say but, God help me, I haven't got the strength. Here's a link to 200+ pages of pure sh*te about the stadium in the Hamilton section - http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=175400

Congrats on the new arena, can't wait to see pics of it going up. That and the Regina stadium will be going up simultaneously, will be fun to watch.

Vikings stadium looks fantastic. HKS Architects who designed this stadium as well as Cowboy's Stadium are one of the 3 finalists for bids for the Regina stadium. Be very interesting to see what they come up with, I think its also safe to say that they are the early 'favourite' to win the project since they are teamed up with PCL who does ALOT of govt projects here in Sask. May the best team win.

It would have been marginally acceptable if the east stands were a mirror of the west, however, probably can't be done for 119 mil. Surely there is someone in the Hammer that could have kicked in some additional funds (ala Katz)?
That said, the new digs are an improvement over IWS and I don't think as tragic as some are making the new stadium out to be.

The Winnipeg stadium demolition looks like the new design for Hamilton's under construction stadium.

Very impressive arena design for Edmonton. People can quibble with the funding arrangements and debate that aspect of it, but the project itself looks flawless.
