Here's an oddball one in Halifax. They are doing site prep (edit: actually under construction, but the rendering is still interesting).

This is basically a suburban development, but there's rarely a good excuse for having parking in front like this.

Where is that?

If it's in Clayton Park, it's better than most of what currently exists there. Driving up Lacewood Dr. and Parkland Dr. is always very disappointingto see the way the buildings were arranged in the built environment. Such a bleak landscape.

Dutch Village Road. That neighbourhood could basically go either way. It's semi-suburban, with some storefront retail, some old apartment buildings, some strip malls, and some detached housing. If half a dozen or so urban developments along this scale are built it might become another urban neighbourhood. If it gets a bunch of tower-in-parking-lot condos and strip malls then it will become suburbia.

Yep, everything that currently remains will stay on the old Federal building. The only difference will be a 5 storey addition.

No way, the area is much better now, more restaurants, theatres and cinemas. No more 905 douche bags in the core for bad night clubs. This area has turned into a 24/hr hub from a 9-5 Mon to Fri work place and weekend hang out for spoiled 19 year old hang out. Bring on the sexy Persian sex trade workers. Most of the downtown is developing around generation X. We don't need clubs anymore. It must suck to be generation Next.

The Club district only catered to one demographic, that's why it died. Also it will not move to another area, no ward in the city would want that mess of drunk teens and high crime that went with it.

As for generation X gentrifying into oblivion, LOL. They are the ones opening up new bars and restaurants and turning areas of the city like Ossignton, Riverside, Roncesville and other places into exciting new hoods. They are the ones with all the money now.

You're wrong on that one. Generation Y is the biggest since the baby boomers. They make up 1/3 of the US population. Generation X is one of the smallest.

He's got a point - Toronto's "entertainment" district is pretty lame. Last time I went there it was full of suburban chain restos. There are some decent bars in TO, mostly smaller clubs and lounges. But it certainly punches below its weight for a city of that size. It doesn't seem like there's much of a drinking culture in Ontario though compared to other parts of Canada.

And Bangkok is an amazingly liveable city. Not just because you can buy a beer at 7-11 and walk down the street, but that's part of it. They also have fantastic and abundant street food, market stalls everywhere, a tolerant and rich culture, and businesses are not stifled by the over-regulation that is all too common in North America.

Yeah, as much as Gibbroni has a way of putting people off, he's got a point. He's more in to a live-and-let-live style of life, and I don't blame him. I actually kind of fear moving back to NA where everything is so strict.

I've lived in East Asia for 10 years where they take the whole 'do as you please as long as it doesn't displease others' to heart. It makes for much more interesting towns and cities, in the day and in the night. I guess some people don't see the harm in having their local/provincial/federal government telling them where and when they can do whatever, but once you get out of that bubble, it's extremely hard to go back and accept that level of ultra-strict regulation.
