EDMONTON - The city transportation department says a new west-end LRT line should follow 87th Avenue and tunnel under houses near the North Saskatchewan River to reduce neighbourhood disruption.
The proposed route would go under homes in Parkview, come out of the river bank near the Valley Zoo, cross a bridge and travel through a tunnel on the opposite bank, Coun. Bryan Anderson said today.
The line would reach ground level near the Cross Cancer Institute and join the existing south LRT at the Health Sciences station, he said.

But Coun. Karen Leibovici said she still feels a route that followed Whitemud Drive across the Quesnell Bridge before eventually reaching the new South Campus LRT station would better take commuters where they want to go and help reduce traffic volumes.
"The rationale keeps being everyone's going downtown. Well, you know what? We have significant employment centres at West Edmonton Mall and the northwest, southwest and southeast. That's where people are travelling."
