Since we post so many threads about Edmonton Public Transit, don't you think we should just create one stickied superthread? ala the Edmonton construction thread..
Anyway, I have a simple question. If you could vote in a public transit referendum, would you support a large scale LRT system expansion, as well as BRT? I have contacted Citizens for Better Transit about starting a citizen led campaign to get more rapid transit built in the city or at least an online petition just to see if more pressure could be put on all levels of government to get some more system expansion started with actual an actual timeline for more transit.

Actually, it's closer to about 20 forumers here who are Edmontonians or from other parts of the Greater Edmonton area at least.

How do you think the system should be financed? Where should the money come from? Personally I'd say set aside a chunk of gas taxes each year for a rapid transit fund. I believe between all levels of goverment close to $1 bln/year is collected in Alberta alone. So Edmonton's chunk would be around 333 mln/year and perhaps half of that should be set aside for rapid transit. So 1.5 bln over 10 years, which isn't alot in some respects but it would be enough to get a few more legs done within a decade.

Change is impossible if the impediments to it remain in positions of power. Some people need to retire, and in Edmonton speak, that means they will die in their office.
There's no reason why the province couldn't put aside $2-billion to create a sustainable transportation fund. The interest from the fund can be used to start a continuous construction program where 1-2km of rail can be constructed per year and station construction would be funded by the cities. This, however, would require an overall strategy for construction, which I'm glad to see Edmonton and Calgary are doing.
I'd like to see BRT only as a temporary solution until LRT is built, not a replacement. I really don't see any value in special BRT lanes that would probably cost as much as LRT if demolition was needed to build them.
I concur with element 103 that we need a sustainable transit fund as a long term financing solution to get more built.
