The edit was reverted, and rightly so, because no source was provided. So, at the moment, it is no longer on Wikipedia. The above aside, March 30, is an awfully fast start, for an operation of this size, lot's of ground work to do, in secret, since it hasn't been announced. And it's impossible to keep a startup a secret because of all the public preparations that must be made. Also they have to sell the product, with less than a 60 day lead.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade. I wish YEG all the best. But I've been burned when I suspended my better judgment - specifically the Calgary Madrid debacle, prompted by a totally erroneous article in the Calgary Sun , which I'm sure many of you followed with amusement in the Calgary International thread.

People get excited and the speculation runs rampant...

There are excellent announcements,ok announcements and oh big deal announcements in the end they are all good for YEG.

Not saying anything really...

I am however surprised by the number of ''oh it cant be such and such''.

We have lived with shallow air service in YEG for a long time, that is on the verge of changing.People find it hard to believe but its true...

Regarding today's announcement of a new year-round, non-stop international flight out of the Edmonton International.

It's going to Mexico City, on Mexicana Airlines. Three times a week.

Snowbirds from Canada to Mexico in winter. Affluent Mexicans heading to the cool, cool north in summer.

Connections to Latin America, South America and sunshine coasts.

This has been in the making for a few years, ever since Mexicana and Mexico tour operators started bringing charters from Mexico City to Edmonton in 2004.

Congrats guys, at least your paper didn't screw up and say it was Iberia to Spain!

Oh wait I see it was the Sun that broke this one too, I guess they learned from the mistake the Sun made down here. Otherwise I bet they would have done the same thing!

Well if Mexicana is the announcement for today I'm making my pick for the next announcement.

I'm going with cargo service to Asia, and picking that Jade Cargo that was mentioned earlier. 3-4x weekly to start.

I guess their jealous that we have 3 flights weekly and they only have 4. :-) If this is the big announcement I would have to say it didn't live up to the hype. We already have great service into Mexico via charters.

Lives up to the hype? Maybe not, but as Tuffyy has said this is the first of a few announcements to come.

Also for aviation geeks, seeing a new airline in town is always a big deal. Just like I love catching a glimpse of Asiana or Cargolux 747's here in YYC if they are running behind and actually are visible during daylight hours!
