Air China and Shanghai Airlines formally joined Star Alliance
On Dec 12th, Air China Limited (hereinafter “Air China”) and Shanghai Airlines formally joined Star Alliance at a ceremony held in the new Terminal Three at Beijing Capital International Airport. With the addition of the two Chinese airlines, Star Alliance now has 19 member carriers operating 17,000 daily flights to 897 destinations in 160 countries, offering international travellers more choice than any other airline alliance.
On domestic routes alone, Air China and Shanghai Airlines have added more than 40 new destinations to the Star Alliance network
In order to provide better interconnection between international flights and domestic destinations in China, Air China, Shanghai Airlines and other Star Alliance member carriers are working together to improve the two key airports in China -- Beijing Capital International Airport and Shanghai Pudong Airport.

Terminal Two in Shanghai Pudong Airport will also open in March2008 and permit all Star Alliance members to operate from the new terminal.
The Star Alliance allows its members and their passengers to cooperate in several areas of mutual interest, including their frequent flyer programs. Shanghai Airlines’ Crane members and Air China’s members will also be able to earn and redeem miles on Air Canada flights.

Air China and Shanghai are almost certainly out of the question. Although either one could serve Canada, Chinese airlines are only allowed to two destinations in Canada. Well ANA has tested the waters operating those summer charter flights into YYC with the 777's and 747's. Didn't they operate into YEG as well?

AC has Toronto to China...and if it is indeed cargo related, Edmonton and Port Alberta would be very logical.

Yes ANA served Edmonton with 747-400's for ''Aurora'' charters.

Others who have done the charter deal to YEG also include AeroMexico,LOT,etc etc.

That would make our forumer 'The Chemist' very happy, seeing as he is residing there right now. Perhaps an easier way to get home to Calgary ultimately.

Theres been many Chinese delegations who've toured Edmonton the last little while. And with both China and Alberta booming, I wouldn't be surprised to see a direct air link between the two destinations. Theres much business that can be done between these two powerhouses. Then you throw in Port Alberta and all the cargo... sounds like a possibility to me.

If this is true, let's hope WestJet signs some codesharing agreement with KLM / Air France soon. With WJ treating YEG pretty well, maybe the two could really work well together.
