I took a walk to the west today... the core for the south Emerald is topped out already! But I don't think we'll call the building topped out until the whole frame is finished. There are at least 7 caissons at The Mondial, even though the parking lot is not completely torn up yet. And the foundation company is one I've never heard of... guess Case and Revcon have their hands full. How do you pronounce "Mondial"? The way it comes out in my head it's almost indistinguishable from "Mondale".

740 Fulton can be moved to the completed list now - there's one missing window at the top and a plywood door at the bottom, but everything else is in place and it's largely occupied.

About the Jahn building south of NBC Tower, I would guess it's dead since that's the site being talked about for the skyscraper with the individual rotating floors. It seems we all forgot about that pretty quickly, huh? I wonder if that one's still alive.

I checked out 565 West Quincy, and there's no visible activity but it should be put on an informal "watch list" since the newspaper ads are calling it u.c. already. That's usually a harbinger of upcoming construction. Like BCBS there'll probably be a lot of internal work before columns start rising from the roof.

I would say the rotating tower was not even DOA......I doubt that was ever even remotely close to a "real" proposal...

Good news on the Athletic Club. I hope Reily doesn't try to save EVERY building in the city though. However, I think this one is worth it.

VDT-Designed Kinzie/Wells Apartment Tower

Has anybody heard anything regarding this proposal recently? Shawn?
I'd love to see some more VDT downtown...
This was the proposal that apparently had replaced another one for that site (SCB-designed office condo tower)...

It seems more like a typical strategy for marketing a luxury rental tower or perhaps a condo development targeted to hip young professionals, and not the type of demographic I would have expected to generally be able to afford the very high price points which I would have assumed would be offered at The Peshtigo. Interesting……I can’t wait to see this all unfold….

Also, I do have to say – if Related Midwest really is preparing to launch The Peshtigo later this year, that is a very bold move overall. I’d figure they’d just about have there hands full with the marketing campaign now in full gear on that little (I’m estimating here) $450-500 million project known as Canyon Ranch Living Chicago.
I like bold moves, I hope they move ahead and deliver on The Peshtigo!
I went to their website, and I agree with Sam...very peculiar. Who knows who they are targeting.

Alderman Reilly Opposed to Demolition of Lake Shore Athletic Club

Believes Club is Historically Significant; Advocates for Preservation and Re-Use of Building

Chicago - Alderman Brendan Reilly (42nd Ward) today announced his opposition to a proposal by Northwestern University and Fifield Development to demolish the historic Lake Shore Athletic Club and replace it with a new high-end luxury condominium complex at 850 North Lake Shore Drive. Reilly announced his opposition to the project after hosting numerous meetings with local residents, experienced architects, zoning attorneys, developers, preservationists and urban planning consultants to discuss the Fifield proposal and other options for re- use of the property.

"Over the past seven weeks, I have worked hard to uphold my commitment to proactively solicit input on important development decisions," Reilly said. "I have heard from hundreds of local residents; hosted numerous meetings with community groups; and met with a broad spectrum of preservationists, architects, zoning experts and developers - to carefully consider and fully understand all perspectives and arguments for and against the demolition of the Lake Shore Athletic Club. After spending countless hours reviewing the facts and speaking with experts on both sides of this issue, I have determined that every effort should be made to preserve and re-use the historic Lake Shore Athletic Club located at 850 North Lake Shore Drive."

On April 16th, Northwestern requested a demolition permit to raze the Lake Shore Athletic Club. This request automatically triggered a 90-day "demolition delay" because the building is rated "orange" on the Chicago Historical Resources Survey - a classification given to "historically significant buildings" that may qualify for landmark status. Because the request was filed five weeks prior to Reilly taking office, he inherited a looming demolition deadline of July 16th. On Monday, Reilly secured a binding legal agreement between the city of Chicago and Northwestern to extend the deadline on the demolition delay by 60 days - to September 16th.

"Given the magnitude of this important development decision, I did not think that seven weeks was a reasonable timeframe to allow for ample community input, a full review of the developer's proposal and to explore all other possible options for the property," Reilly said. "On Monday, I secured a binding legal agreement to extend the deadline to September 16th - to ensure that the developer did not move forward with plans to demolish the building next week."

Throughout the public process, Northwestern University and Fifield Development have argued that there is absolutely no economically viable re-use option for the Lake Shore Athletic Club. After meeting with many experienced architects, zoning lawyers, developers and consultants - examining a host of potential options, Reilly determined the property can and should be saved.

"Throughout this process, Northwestern and Fifield have argued there is absolutely no economically viable re-use option that could save the Lake Shore Athletic Club from demolition," Reilly explained. "Frankly, I am not persuaded by that argument. After meeting with many experienced architects, zoning attorneys, developers and urban planning consultants, I believe economically viable re- use options do, in fact, exist (or can be developed) for this property and that every effort should be made to preserve and re-use the historic Lake Shore Athletic Club."

"The Lake Shore Athletic Club is a historically significant building designed by famous architect: Jarvis Hunt. Home to some 1928 Olympic Trials, the Lake Shore Athletic Club has graced our lakefront skyline for more than 80 years and has served as an important architectural counterpoint to the neighboring Mies Van der Rohe buildings in the Streeterville neighborhood. We have precious few historic structures like the Lake Shore Athletic Club still standing in Chicago and arguments to demolish such buildings require extra scrutiny, healthy community input and careful consideration of all available options for re-use and redevelopment," said Reilly.

Alderman Reilly recognized Northwestern University and Fifield Development for their participation in the public process and their willingness to share information about their proposal with local residents and stakeholders. "I want to thank Northwestern University and Fifield Development for their willingness to work with my office to meet with local residents, neighborhood organizations and other stakeholders to share information about their proposal and to listen to community concerns," Reilly said. "We simply do not agree on what is the most responsible use for this property and what is in the best interest of the community as a whole on this particular project."

"As I continue to review development proposals for the 42nd Ward, I will do so in an open, objective and transparent manner. Each project that I review will receive careful consideration and I will work hard to carefully weigh each decision by balancing the needs of the business community with the needs of local residents and the best interests of the city of Chicago," said Reilly.

Alderman Reilly represents the 42nd Ward which includes all, or portions, of the Loop, West Loop, Fulton River District, Gold Coast, Near North, River North, Streeterville and New Eastside neighborhoods of downtown Chicago.

Sure, TUP, I'll oblige you. All photos taken 7/9. My photo tour may be a bit unorthodox; it wasn't really a construction tour (I'm entered into a Classical photo competition, so I was scouting out pediments, cornices, and columns).

Is that a caisson rig in the second photo? It's obviously gonna drill something.

150 E Ontario

150 E Ontario is listed in site-prep, but I haven't heard anything about it for ages. Does anyone have any inside information about where its at? I haven't heard anything about marketing for it either....... I really like that tower and I think it would fit in perfectly in that spot.

Yes, it is the new Jewel grocery store. I came into this thread to ask about the site... I stopped and took a look after my bike ride today and noticed that there are a lot of caissons in the ground. They aren't super big and it's impossible to know how deep they are, but it made me wonder about the site. Is something going to go on top of the Jewel?

I also noticed that the high-rise portion of the Trio development has a foundation in place (or at least some of it in place). A lot of it is covered up, and there really isn't much in the way of construction equipment on site. From looking at MLS listings, it doesn't look like the mid-rise portions have sold very well, so I wonder how long, if ever, it will take for them to get going on the tower. And we can't forget about the park they are supposed to build!

I've always pronounced it "MOAN-deal". Citta Development likes Italian names.

I had just been wondering what the deal is with the Trio high-rise. If sales are slow right now, one thing is for sure - as soon as the Jewel opens, I would think the remaining units would go pretty quickly...
