Bad, really? I've seen much worse.

Bad? hell i wouldn't mind if that was the average in NY. Our brick towers come out so much cheaper, that is a high quality tower and adds a nice context to that area.

^ That's nice to know. Unless you follow NY threads / news somehow, all you see are the banner projects....

Agreed that it's an exciting project. Did we ever confirm Booth-Hansen are the architects?

Concerning the cantilever effect, it's not really a cantilever at all from the early renders we saw... They are just adding some floors and transferring the loads to the existing columns with those cool truss-like columns at the juncture.

Your news about the Murphy-Jahn project is a real heart-breaker. I was hoping for something amazing by him there, and it sounds like that's what was in store... perhaps it will still happen.

Thanks, of course you're right. Someone will have to look into the proper name and address. I'm sure it WILL have a real name if it's a university building. So we'll go with June as the start date? Or do you remember it starting before June 1?

I took a walk to the west today... the core for the south Emerald is topped out already! But I don't think we'll call the building topped out until the whole frame is finished. There are at least 7 caissons at The Mondial, even though the parking lot is not completely torn up yet. And the foundation company is one I've never heard of... guess Case and Revcon have their hands full. How do you pronounce "Mondial"? The way it comes out in my head it's almost indistinguishable from "Mondale".

740 Fulton can be moved to the completed list now - there's one missing window at the top and a plywood door at the bottom, but everything else is in place and it's largely occupied.

About the Jahn building south of NBC Tower, I would guess it's dead since that's the site being talked about for the skyscraper with the individual rotating floors. It seems we all forgot about that pretty quickly, huh? I wonder if that one's still alive.

I checked out 565 West Quincy, and there's no visible activity but it should be put on an informal "watch list" since the newspaper ads are calling it u.c. already. That's usually a harbinger of upcoming construction. Like BCBS there'll probably be a lot of internal work before columns start rising from the roof.

I dont know why everybody hates the columbian...I think it actually came out better than the rendering...adds good height to that area and a halfway decent design.

EDIT: i like the re-do of the facade, but why only half??

ANOTHER EDIT: is that a winter garden or something up on top? after thinking about the half and half facade, i don't know... it might look pretty cool if it gets pulled off well... i don't know, we'll see i guess

I feel like this is a pretty old and probably obsolete rendering. Aside from that, I don't mind the half and half stuff as much as I mind the Morrissey/Conan OBrien/Richie Rich pompadour that they slapped on the top (which I think is deleted from the current renderings - thank god).

ANYTHING else than what's there so that it's not empty sky after those two lone buildings in the skyline and so that the walk up to target doesn't feel so much i'm walking on a damn expressway. also that empty lot on the west side of wabash next to the hotel roosevelt needs to be replaced with something in the 400' range... and finally, the huge lot behind the columbian tower needs a 500+ footer too.

my 2 cents
I kinda like the Columbian. The bricks are something different. And unless I'm missing something, aren't they busily building said partners in height...in this very picture?!?!

I don't want to speak for AXS but I think what he is talking about is the relative depth of the skyline at this point. Once you get past the Columbian and 1120 S. Michigan there is nothing and very few places to build mass. There is a lot that sits directly west of the gapping hole between these two buildings that may be able to support another high-rise. I know that the new high grocery store had plans to use it as a surface parking lot. There is another lot directly north of the Roosevelt that is a was a sales lot for several recent developments that could also support a high rise. Not much more than that.

Patience....once OMP1 and OMP1W, Astoria Tower, the X/O towers, and the numerous other high rises that are U/C or that have been approved are built, there will be a lot more depth in the South Loop skyline. I have also heard that Park 1000 may be starting construction in about a month. And if we can get two Museum Park high-rises between Michigan and Indiana, plus the Park Michigan, the Columbian will not only have a lot more tall neigbhors, but will be significantly smaller than at least a few other South Loop high-rises. Granted, it doesn't have as much depth as the loop or even Streeterville/River North...and I agree that Dearborn Park really helps that. It will help when all the South Loop highrises along Clark and Wells get completed...and it would be great to get at least a few high rises in the area south of Roosevelt between Clark and Wells (I think it's called Riverside?) Don't forget that proposed multi-tower mega-project with a supertall, on the SW corner of Wells and Harrison.

Long story short, the South Loop will be much more filled in in even just maybe 1-2 years from now....give it 5 more years, and the skyline should be even quite a bit denser.

I was told at the sales center that demolition/"construction" has started on the inside of the existing building. The sales center rep said they only work after 6pm though, so that may be why we rarely see much action.

and about everyone who says they like it. well i would 'like' it too if it were in river north or somewhere up there, because everything around it would match its height better and it wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb... but whatever, it did turn out a lot better than i thought it would.
You're going to have a 150-story; 2,000' tall tower next to 2-story townhouses Go figure.

Yep, that lot will likely sprout a 35-45 story tower pretty soon. That will fill in the hole between The Columbian and 1130 S. Michigan in the photo above.
