Damn, hope that happens. Construction should be quick given that they are starting above grade already.

Great to see. I was asked a couple of years ago if they could decommission their high rise fire pump that needed to be tested regularly even though there was no high rise. They may have been losing hope that someone would build something.

I'm just glad we're changing it up a bit and getting a blue glass tower!

Looks like City of Edmonton is looking at decommissioning the Low Level Bridge and High LEvel Bridge. Rebuilding High Level Bridge would be a great opportunity to get the low floor LRT into Old Strathcona.

I knew it was going to happen at some point, but the six years I lived in Edmonton - and going there for various things all through my childhood and upbringing - always included crossing the High Level bridge. Nearly every damn time.

It it such an important piece of the Edmonton identity I don't even know what would could replace it.

It's going to be a really sad day for me to see it go.l

Look at me, getting emotional over a freakin' bridge. This is how good my memories of Edmonton are.

I wouldn't get too concerned about the City 'replacing' the HLB as it is a designated Municipal Historic Resource. My gut tells me that the City will establish a new crossing, likely down by the Walterdale, which will involve converting the one way roads to two-way with lane control or something. The opportunity to reposition the High Level into a pedestrian/bicycle only crossing along with a park on top is what's most exciting for me.

So your plan is all the southbound traffic on 109 and over the High Level will bee redirected to go down under the Legislature tunnel or into the core to down 106th street and onto a new bridge adjacent to the Waterdale? Maybe I am misunderstanding your comment as it sounds like a cluster fuck.

Yeah, I agree, I'm not sure how that would be feasible. However preserving the HLB and turning it into a park/pedestrian use only path would be ideal. The bridge is such an internal part of Edmonton's history.

If it was up to me, I would build a new 4-lane 2-way HLB for vehicles, ETS buses and HSR while retaining the old HLB for pedestrians, cyclists and the streetcar.

That would be ideal but my understanding from what the City was saying was that just to rehabilitate the HLB to just be used for anything over the next 70+ years would cost up to $1 billion. Hopefully I am not understanding it correctly, but if that's the case then I can see why the City is reluctant to spend that much and just consider replacing it entirely.
