What a rebuke to the Democratic Party establishment! This result seems completely out of step with the current trends in American society. How does one explain it?
It's completely in step. There wasn't a wholescale move to the right. There was a rejection of the establishment by low information voters. A rejection of woke by centrists and a rejection of the status quo by everyone. There is also a rebound on the left against Trump and centrism that was the driving force in his campaign. It's also a continuation of the immaturity of the American electorate who are easily distracted by unrealistic shiny objects that can rescue them from their own poor financial decisions. Tariffs or state owned grocery stores being equally ridiculous.
