I agree, completely. And I’m not picking on Walmart; just using it as an example. I could have used Home Depot, just as easily.
Looking at labels is nothing new for me. I used to preferentially shop at Rona, because of its Canadian roots. Now that it is owned by the US firm Sycamore (after Lowe’s sold it at a tremendous loss) Home Hardware Building Centres are my go-to. (Although I have been known to shop at the big US-based stores occasionally, too.)
The extent of the intertwining between Canadian products and those from the US is quite evident when I look at my grocery flyers. There are now little red maple-leaf markers on many of the products that hold ‘American’ names. In fact, I am finding that there are few changes that I have to make to buy Canadian.
And, in the LCBO, it has been easy. I don’t like the taste of California wines; and I’m a Scotch man, not a Bourbon guy.
