At first I was sure the point of the ad was that the two rich Boomers playing golf were Liberal voters: “Can you believe I had to supply Sarah’s downpayment! Thankfully, reelecting the JT-era Libs for a 4th term, the Scheme of Great Landed Gentry Enrichment should continue so it’s no big deal all things considered! Let’s resume our golfing!

Election Watch: Poilievre’s Failed U.S. “Three Strikes” Proposal

Research has found such laws actually increase homicide by 23-29% because witnesses or victims are killed to prevent a conviction for the third offence. They don’t prevent crime and lead to absurd outcomes. In Canada, they would also be patently unconstitutional.

Under Poilievre’s proposal, upon conviction for a third “serious offence”, individuals would be subject to a 10-year mandatory term of imprisonment, followed by indeterminate imprisonment.

Such policies were all the rage in circles that Poilievre travelled as a Reform Party intern in the 1990s. Since then, the fallout of these laws has been made clear.

----

What kind of moron would try to introduce a criminal justice measure, that even America- known for it's harsh sentencing, admitted "3 strikes laws" were a total failure, and is attempting to abolish them in many states.

I actually have send hand embarrassment for them.

Conservatives are the most thinned skinned people on Earth. There have been reports all over Canada of Liberal signs being stolen, vandalised, or their owners harassed. However, the moment some Conservative signs go missing, they call every single news agency in North America, and file numerous Police reports.

Given that some extreme conservative partisans have been showing up at Carney's events with bullhorns saying all kinds of shit about his wife and daughter, this seems rather tame.

I actually don't think it's a bad ad. But putting two old rich white guys on a golf course, is a bit too on the nose for the stereotype about conservatives.

If they were going to do an ad like this (the message isn't wrong), how about consider that women and non-whites care about their adult kids too? Maybe take in to account that they gotta move votes in the GTA and Lower Mainland where two old white guys are kinda far from the median senior demographic?

I wish they'd moderate. But I'll also be the first to admit, that they clearly don't see moderates like me as valuable. For their reasons, they've decided that ramping up the base is a winning strategy. Some of the worst excesses of that may be tempered by a loss. But I don't think they'll see wholesale change.

There's a good likelihood the propaganda emanating from the US will make it almost impossible for a card carrying conservative to be a progressive conservative going forward. Just as it's hard for left leaning parties to avoid importing issue from the US.

Maybe it's just too hard in the internet age for parties to avoid American culture wars. But hopefully Carney winning will provide the takeaway that eschewing culture wars is actually the path to victory in Canada. I'll note that his platform is almost all about bread and butter economic issues. Even where he thinks about climate or security, it comes back to economics. This is different from Trudeau crafting "feminist budgets" where his ideology drove his economics. Voters are clearly responding to Carney's more centrist (and less ideological) approach.

It's also not a claim of any real personal success. It's just a claim of a track record of making claims.

My financial advisor is a guy who was a successful equities trader at National Bank and got started months before the GFC. I trust a guy who can survive a crisis like that. And he brags a lot less than this poster here.

Whatever you want to call it, Carney's experience or knowledge is irrelevant when he's copying and pasting the same policies that failed during the Justin Trudeau years. Even if you were to believe he has insight into the failures that have led to our housing crisis, the argument being put forward here is "just trust him, he was the governor of the Bank of Canada".
If you think I'm being pedantic then you misunderstood what I'm saying. I'm not saying it was a poor choice of words to describe a valid criticism, I'm questioning the validity if the criticism.

Your argument seems to be that the Liberal housing plan is automatically bad because a similar plan didn't show strong enough results under Trudeau. But that assumes that the failure was because the plan was bad without considering that it may have just been poorly executed. Because if it was the latter, only minor tweaks would be needed by someone capable of identifying and correcting the flaws.

One week to go and still no costed CPC platform - mustn't be able to figure out what social programs to cut to pay for all the other promises or they're worried about out-spending Carney and showing a larger deficit than the NDP.

I have heard the stories about my Son's Afghanistan experiences so quell the Islamophobia garbage. I would suggest you also do some research on the 2000 proposed peace accords that Arafat could not, would not and did not sell to his people. The Palestinians DO NOT want a two state solution. Period. Yet that is the best they will be offered and have been offered.

Ask yourself this. Would the Gaza carnage, I refuse to call it a genocide, be over in half an hour if the Hostages and remains were returned to Israel?

Coming out with the costed platform after 30 percent of the electorate has voted seems shoddy, not that the other two parties were exactly timely.

Mark Carney has been PM for like 5 weeks and was able to get a platform out. Pierre has been leader for 2 years and asking for an election. If he isn't ready with a costed platform, how can he be ready to be PM.

This the the security clearance really make me think that they are hiding things.

Interesting compromise on vandalism here this election. Every sign I checked has "What about Gaza?" spraypainted on the back but not damage to the front. Bins and stop signs, though...

Liberal signs far outnumber the NDP for the first time in a decade or so.

The issue a lot of us would take with this is declaring that 1) an entire population of people don't want something based on the actions of a politician and that 2) they don't deserve basic human rights even if they did hold opinions we don't agree with.

Arafat isn't even the current leader, but even if he was it makes no sense to hold the general public responsible for his failings. It would be like saying that Canadians don't deserve human rights (such as to not be brutally slaughtered) because of a bad decision made by Jean Chretien. Not only didn't everyone vote for him when he was around, the ones who did may not have approved of every decision he made. And the ones who approved could have changed their minds since then considering Arafat hasn't been leader in over 20 years. Which means a lot of the people around today weren't even born back then or not old enough to vote. So even if supporting Arafat meant someone didn't deserve human rights, there's no way to apply that en masse to the general population.

But to answer the question, no I don't believe for a moment that Netanyahu would stop.

IMHO, Carney should recognise Palestine as a state, while encouraging an embargo on Israel. Why are we supporting Israel anyway. Now that Americans are not our friends, we are free to be pragmatic about the issue.

Canada should be extending an olive branch to the Muslim World, which is almost 25% of the population, and form better trade with Islamic countries. Aside from that, what has Israel ever done for us? We have to do what is best for Canada.

Canada tends to stick to upholding international law. By that yardstick, Palestine does not qualify as a "State". Canada could recognize it in any event, as a purely political gesture.

If Canada wanted to uphold international law, they would officially recognise what is happening to the people of Gaza, as a genocide. It's the least we can do, since the USA and Israel would threaten war with us, if we started to send contingents of peacekeepers into the area.

We should be calling for Netanyahu and some of his cabinet to be tried for war comes, in the Hague. We should also sever all ties to Israel, and ban him from Canadian soil. The Israelis actually are delaying hostages from being released, as they want to murder all 2,000,000 people of Gaza. Even when released, the IDF will continue to annihilate the people of Gaza.
