We may have been poor, but, I had a generally happy (or at least non traumatized) childhood. My mother was an inspiration. There were lots of books in the house. I had three siblings and between the four of us, we earned a total of seven university degrees. My mother must have done something right.
I think it speaks to her character that she did not even have a high school education but went back to earn her GED when she was in her late fifties.
A high value was placed on education in the house.
