All other parcels are sold off to developers who actually build the homes.

In that setup the city controls how the city grows. In reality all the work is done by sub-contractors who either bid to build the sub-division or buy lots to develop.

Carney is proposing modular homes. Certain at the end of the day, its not going to be government employees build housing but doing contract management. No shortage of modular home builders out there these days.
Modular homes?

Canada had 224,000 housing starts in 2023… and carney is proposing 500,000 per year, so the difference being 275,000 modular homes, per year…

Wow, Canada…

My read of the announcement is factory made homes or kits that can be built quickly. Similar to what was done at the end of WWII.

Goal here is low cost mass housing. That should augment what is already being built.

Offering a bounty on your political opponent to be turned over to a hostile, foreign government (presumably so that they can be tortured) is a… “teachable moment”?

Also, it’s a crime under Section 264.1 of Canada’s Criminal Code.

You’d hope our Prime Minister would know this.

It was the Hong Kong authorities who offered the bounty, not the MP.

Target to be reached over a ten year period. Still, pretty hefty numbers.

As far Paul Chiang goes, has he provided an explanation for why he made those comments? I recall reading a biographic profile of him many years ago when he first entered politics, and he didn't seem to have the profile of someone who may be a Chinese agent. My first read of his quote wasn't that he was suggesting that people should hand over Tay - just pointing out that a bounty against him existed. Some context would be helpful.

BTW, Han dong has ended his political career despite Foreign Interference Commission largely supporting his defense re: the Michaels' controversy.

It’d be quite the accomplishment. I’d like to see that factories alone that could pump out 10’s of thousands of modular homes.

Smells like an incredibly fishy promise.

A nation built of modular homes… is this seriously the answer?

I've decided that the word "promise" is the wrong way to look at electoral platforms. Perhaps "statement of intention" would be closer to the mark.

I’d agree. I’ll rephrase… smells like an incredibly fishy statement of intention

Trump has shown pretty convincingly that the general public doesn't care about these controversy and giving in to public pressure just makes you look weak especially to men.
The best thing to do is to double down and not talk about it again and after a week the public doesn't care anymore.

the case of Han dong is a perfect example of the public not caring after a couple of weeks about the issue.
If he decided to run again no one would care about the controversy.

They were also constant Trump apologists during his first term. Birds of a feather.

The generous might say that a politician's reach should exceed their grasp. Although the thought of grasping politicians ...

I'd argue what we do not want to become is a nation teeming with trailer parks to house the poors and dopers, like our neighbour to the south. Living smaller is an admirable goal, but the outcome does not need to be squalid shantytowns where marginalized people of low education and no prospects languish.

Again, it depends on the proportion of people of HK and/or Taiwanese descent in GTA (who are pro-independence) + mainlander Chinese sympathetic to their cause. (The latter group does exist.) Maybe there aren’t that many of them, so it doesn’t matter. Maybe there are enough of them to cause a couple of ridings to go blue this election.

Where do you rank tent cities in all this?

Modular homes aren't trailers.

He seems to have been joking. His apology says he didn’t treat it with the seriousness it deserves. Carney should say it was a mistake and he’s done with cancel culture. He’ll have to give a pass to the inevitable racist tweet from some CPC MP in a non competitive seat but doesn’t lose a good MP who has crossover appeal to several key communities in the GTA (He’s ethnically Chinese but from Pakistan.

Only the working classes could afford mobile/manufactured homes nowadays.

I see nothing wrong with the tiny post-war homes that are found in the inner areas of most Canadian cities. They were small homes, great for young families just starting out.

My grandparents raised 4 kids on Pasqua Street in Regina. It was tight but not atypical for the times: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4Jw3LDPFKoo9iEKaA
For so many years I saw homes like these getting torn down in favour of duplexes and apartments but I am starting to see more and more of them getting fixed up. Not everyone wants to share walls.

Here's a street in Nova Scotia full of modular homes. My dad built a house on this street 30 years ago. Full concrete foundation and basement. Delivered on 2 trucks. The only way to tell it was built in a factory was by the big ass bolts connecting the 2 sides when you look in the basement ceiling.
