It's still a long shot they win. I think debates will get people back to the issues. And the LPC is weak there. But Carney will have saved the LPC from catastrophe.
Tabling a budget means first having to recall Parliament and begin a new session, which means they have to do a Throne Speech first, and all of the other parties have said they'd vote non confidence at the first chance they get.

CBC reports that Carney will be sworn in as PM on Friday. I'm interested to see what his cabinet is going to look like. I'd hope for some continuity in the senior posts dealing with the USA at the moment, but wonder whether he'll bring in any new faces? It's been reported that he approached Charest. Maybe Notley, Nenshi, Caroline Mulroney, and Kinew will get calls (just having fun).

I would suspect things are fluid.

I hope some thought has gone into determining what needs to be in place to contain Trump during an election period.

Regardless who wins we need to ensure that Trump does not do something that requires an immediate response and we are not able to handle it.

Why would we have any control over what Trump does? Whatever he does, we have a functioning government in place, even during an election campaign.

some guy the other day hung a F**K Mark Carney sign on an overpass in Burnaby , I actually saw it on my commute in to work, it was some guy on his own waving some kind of flag. I saw a pic of it posted on Facebook on some convoy loving page, btw my facebook which I am going to leave is filled with so much Anti-Canadian, Right wing pages these days, anyway the people making comments are so stupid, so many of them are pissed off and said they never voted for him, how is he the Prime Minister etc. so much dumb.

Apparently he doesn't have to call an election till October, do you think its better for him to call one soon or wait a while?

What is hard to do is recall parliament to pass legislation in the middle of an election. Quick review of where we are just now, can we do everything through an order-in-council or are there some things that need legislation. So far they have done ok just with cabinet.

Also lets see what happens Thursday with the Finance Minister and Ford down in Washington. If there is something quick that can be done in short order to stop this then we should do it even if it means delaying the election.

If its a proper renegotiation of a trade deal that will take months to a year and something that should happen after the election.

My own take is Trump's influence and strength is going to decline the longer this lasts. We will probably end up with a better deal for Canada the longer this stretches out. A proper rewrite of the trade deal would need to be ratified by the House and Senate. Not certain he can even pull that off.

Not sure what you have in mind that might require legislation. They are not going to Washington to sign a new trade agreement, or even to open negotiations for one, if Leblanc is to be believed.

My take on what Leblanc has said is the same.

Not certain if they need legislation or not. They have done adjustments to EI, some business loans programs, and tariff adjustments without recalling parliament. Not certain if these are some details about those programs that they need some minor legislative changes.

You literally cannot recall Parliament or pass legislation during an election, because Parliament doesn't exist. You can't recall it because it doesn't exist. The House of Commons ceases to exist. House committees cease to exist.

What does exist is the Caretaker Convention, which allows the routine operation of government to continue and ensure necessary business is transacted. You can read more about it here, where there's a paragraph about COVID-19 that would largely apply to our current situation.

But things like Orders-in-Council wouldn't be allowed, generally. And there's no way to recall Parliament at all, that's not even a thing during an election.

Yep. Agreed. Most succinct way to describe the current situation. And for Carney and the Liberal party, I would suspect they will call an election sooner than later. If they wait until October there is no telling how the winds will change. He has garnered an incredible amount of support in a relatively short period of time, so I would strike now while the iron is hot, so to speak. Canadian patriotism is at an all-time high, support for PP is dwindling and if he wants to be elected PM, waiting might only damage his chances, IMO.

However, he may decide he wants time under the Caretaker Convention to stabilize the economy, initiate discussions across the border and see what inroads he can make in a short period of time. In short, sell himself to the Canadian people. But, I think a spring election is on the horizon.

Mark Carney will have the leanest cabinet since the 1950s - impressive.

I also read he will be the only Order of Canada recipient as PM - is this true?

Carney apparently going to Europe next week according to G&M - that makes an election call less probable...

Maybe he's going direct to Charles 3 to to dissolve Parliament.

So when the election is called, and knowing French is probably Carney's biggest weakness; do the parties have any real control in the order of the debates?

It seems to me that Carney would want the French debate to happen as early as possible to get the hit out of the way. Then he can use the followup English debate for damage control.

I honestly do not think it will matter. What is truly ironic, is that of literally every province, the favourability gap between Carney and Poilievre (French background), is highest in Quebec. Quebecois really do not care for PP.

He can't look too bad (Carney) but now he has advantage of low expectations. I'd be practicing 5 hours a day but he's ultimate technocrat and probably spending most of his day governing rather than thinking about campaign. You better believe Poilievre is honing colloquial French expressions that Carney won't understand or will misinterpret.

Maybe he pulls a Ford. Calls election then goes off to Europe. Maybe Washington. Sidelines Poilievre who will seem small doing campaign events.

Sounds like perfect PP strategy. Canada is being threatened and you have no reasonable response, so go for the gotcha soundbite.

Poilievre's response has been outlined a few times and is not that different from the LPC re: the tariffs. As far as soundbites go, you don't think the LPC is going to try and win the election?
